Okay, my last post was about flashing headlights, which should hopefully be fixed now that I installed a new headlight switch, dimmer switch, and headlight relays. However, when I went to go turn on the lights, I still had the problem with the solenoid clicking and something burning that I had before I installed the relays. Well, I found that something, which is a wire (or two or more) that goes to the taillights. This time it was easy to find because it caught on fire, burning up all the wires around it. It looks to me like the wiring came loose and got burned by the exhaust pipe originally, but I am not sure. What else could have caused this?
Also, any recommendations on places that sell wiring harnesses specific to this model truck, or at least all of the original connectors and stuff so I can redo all that wiring?
eandaauto,
I commend you on your patience. You'll get through this. As far as harnesses, try Painless. I'm not sure if they make one for our vintage, but they get written up all the time in Custom Classic Truck mag for some of the harnesses they make. Good luck. Look at the bright side, at least you aren't a French bicyclist that just has had American Lance Armstrong beat all comers yet again. Viva La America!!!!
I just finished installing an 18 circuit universal Painless harness in my '68. I'm not much of an electrical repair guy, so I found some of it difficult. All in all it wasn't bad. They are designed for easier installation in GM vehicles. I think I paid just under $300 for it from either Jegs or Summit. Can't remember which. I have also heard of "E Z wiring harnesses" recently. The shop that recommended those builds drag cars and restores classics of all types. They said the E Z harness is better to work with than the Painless. I'm sure it just depends on who you ask. Hope this helps!
Okay, I pulled out the wiring harness for the taillights, no more problems with that, so I was finally able to test my headlights. No flashing problems, but my passenger side light won't turn on. Checked, and checked all the wiring again...everything is right and done just as I did on the driver side. Drivers side works for both high and low beam, passenger side works for neither. Checked the bulb, it is good too. What else should I check? Someone mentioned something about the circuit breaker on the passenger side..could there be a problem there?
Did you use a test light on the connector to that headlight to make sure you got power to that light? Also check for a bad ground. How did you check the headlight bulb? The "shake it" method? Use an ohm meter or plug it into the driver's side. The only circuit breaker I know about is actually in the headlight switch.
i did my 69 f100 last year with the 18circut e-z- wire.and it wasn't to bad, except that the wires in my truck were all different than the wiring diagram.
there was a bit of a problem with the extra wires in the ignition, but i finally got it.
didn't help that after the first part day, we got about 12" of snow, and i had to go under the truck.lol
One day when something else catches on fire, I'll break down and rewire the whole truck..haha. Until then, I'm getting my taillight harness(the one that caught on fire) reproduced by a local shop..all I wanted in the first place was working lights!!
