In mid 77 ford changed the frame and a few other things on the F-100. I'm trying to remember where the break is in the serial numbers. In particular I need to find out if I have the 33 1/2" or 37 1/2" wide frame and how to measure. I'm looking to fit a repop rear stock bumper from Bronco or Carpenter.
In mid 77 ford changed the frame and a few other things on the F-100.
The frame changed in 1973, not 1977.
33 1/2" width between the inner frame rails behind the cab: 1961/72 F100/350 ~ 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys) / 1973/79 F350 Cab 'n Chassis & Super Camper/Trailer Specials on the 140" wheelbase.
37 1/2" width between the inner frame rails behind the cab: 1973/79 F100 ~ 1973/79 F250 2WD ~ 1975/79 F150 ~ 1977/79 F250 4WD (Not High Boys) ~ 1973/79 F350's not listed above.
The Bronco's bumper brackets are not the same as the trucks. Bronco's have a stone shield between the body and bumper, so its brackets are a different length.
77.5 aka mid-year (February) 1977 only refers to F250 4WD's.
1967/76 & 1977 F250 4WD's assembled before serial number Y20,001 are High Boys, have a divorced transfer case and an in-cab fuel tank.
1977 F250 4WD's assembled from serial number Y20,001 & 1978/79 F250 4WD's are not High Boys, have a married transfer case, no in-cab fuel tank.
Mike, if you look up 1973/79 rear bumpers (17906), you'll see these two frame rail measurements I listed.
Hmm, things get confusing with Alzhimers! At least I meet a lot of new friends! I'll do some more research and repost. I do know they changed some things in the middle of the 77 year. I'm pretty sure the starter tang was in a different location and I thought aftermarket headers offered two different part numbers. that's what led me to believer the frame had changed.
My frame is 37 1/2" from outside to outside edge measured at the back.
The only changes that occurred mid year 1977 had to do with F250 4WD's assembled before/from serial number Y20,001.
There were no Super Cab High Boys, just Regular and Crew Cab Cab n' Chassis, Flareside & Styleside pickups, and with factory installed flat & stake beds.
