Possibly trade for excursion

Need some input on possibly trading my 2000 F250 7.3 6 speed 2wd with 217,xxx for a 2003 excursion 4x4 v10 with 224,xxx miles.
Need to know the good and bad on v10 and life of engine.

I have the V-10 in my pick up and it has over 200K on it. I bought it with 134K miles. I've taken care of it and it runs great. A solid engine. Try to get some history on the vehicle, hopefully it has been in good hands

Coming from a VERY biased 2 time Diesel owner, the V10 is a terrible engine that is the redheaded step-child of the Triton line up.....

Of course I'm joking, lol!

The V10 is a VERY formidable power plant that is commonly referred to as "The Poor Man's Diesel".

With 310 Hp and 425 lb/ft of torque it's an engine that can easily get out of it's own way and tow up to 11K of whatever you put behind it. You will not be disappointed with the V10, it is a well tuned, well refined, engine also referred to as "Ford's Best Kept Secret". So don't hesistate, take a look at the truck make sure the exhaust manifold studs aren't broken, it idles and accelerates smoothly, and the rest we here at FTE can help you with.

Ok, so my 5.4 is the same as the v-10 with just 2 less cylinders right? Am I missing more than 2 cylinders worth of power from other things they did to the motor that they didn't to the 5.4?

The V-10 are known to have broken exhaust studs (noise at start up), COP go out (miss) and some say spark plug blow out. I have towed with 2 and they were reliable and powerful and fairly efficient but love to rev when power is needed.

So what is your 5.4 hp/torque. I've only based my opinion on what I've read and other post about 5.4, Ive recently got a expedition for my son and it has the 5.4. I know it suck on mpg. 13 nursing it. Think it's a good engine in the light duty applications

I have 146k on my 2003 V10 Excursion and it runs like new. Looks like my exhaust studs were changed out by the last owner. The 7.3's definitely have a better/higher resale value but you will pay more up front. If planning on keeping the truck the V10 is a sound choice - the difference in price pays for a lot of gas. Aside from the exhaust manifold studs as previously mentioned - drive her and feel for misses. The COPs do go bad sometimes. Mine had a bad one that the dealer replaced and she runs great now! I average about 11.6 around town and up to 16+ on the highway with a very light foot. I have heard of V10s going 300k+ if well maintained.

13 mpg with the 460 would be downhill, with a tailwind; and probably alcohol when telling the other 'fish tails'...

The difference in mpg's between 5.4L's and the V-10 aren't that much that is why most suggest in a choice between the 2 engines to go bigger you get more power and lose little if any mpgs. My 00 Ex with V10 and 4.30 gears (better for towing) got a high of 16 mpg's on highway. My 03 Navigator with the 5.4L (32 valve/300hp) could only muster a high of 16 mpg's also. On Rv.net there is a guy who has 300K+ towing heavy with his V10 and they are used in fleets for their robustness and low price of maintenance.
