1949 F1 460 BUILD QUESTIONS

Hello everyone, new to the forum, Been looking around and reading some excellent threads... I bought a running driving 49 f1 6cyl and having a little fun! I have a new drivetrain in mind, I been looking for some info on other 460 builds but don't find much.. I'm thinking of building my 49 f1 with a 460 and c6 combo 9 inch rear, I found mounts for the engine and trans, so that's good... Disc brake kit maybe in front but I like to keep the stock steering and suspension.. Any one done this? Is it safe to rebuild and drive 75mph? Is there better options? I drive the truck as it is stock with a 6 cylinder and I get death wobble at 35 mph,,,

Welcome to the forum! If you get the death wobble now at 35 with the stock drivetrain, you'll definitely want to cure that before adding 400 hp and 500 pounds. Start by inspection the condition of all your front end components. After 65 years, if nothing's been replaced, it's likely to need everything. Start with checking the king pins, tie rod ends, drag link and steering box for excess play. Also check spring eye bushings, as that's one of the more overlooked areas and one of the major culprits of death wobble. When the springs start floating side to side, all kinds of crazy things will happen. Can the stock suspension be made to drive safely at 75? Sure. But it has to be all new from head to toe to do so.

The upgrade to power disc brakes will also be welcome with the addition of extra go power. It's as nice to be able to stop from 75 as it is to get there. Just know that a 460 is wall to wall engine under the hood of a bonus built. Get out your size 14 shoe horn. Good luck with your project.

Welcome to the forum.
I just got my 1949 F4 back on the road. Front suspension is stock with the addition of shocks.
Every moving wear part has been replaced, the steering box is tight, running small caster wedges and tubeless radial 270 R 19.5 tires. It is running 1/16" toe in. Stock brake system has been rebuilt. With the upgraded drive train, engine, transmission, rear end, it will run down the road 70 mph with ease, steer nicely doing it and stops quite well. 70 mph is the speed limit in my area.
Edit: Went back and read your request for 460 build. My engine lacks about 100 CID from what you are proposing.
