I have a ford f100 83 model, and i need to know how to weld the rear end to make it positive traction, can someone help? Also i need to know what kind of ignition module it takes. Thanks
"Positive Traction" (PosiTrac) is the GM name for a limited slip - what you're making is a "Lincoln Locker" (named for the welding machine), or a "spool". Basically, you just weld the spider gears together so they won't turn ever again, but it also makes it almost impossible to service the axle. You may not be able to replace seals, bearings, axles, or gears, so think about it. Plus, the welding spatter can contaminate the oil and cause all those parts to wear out FAST, so try to figure out how to do it OUT of the axle.
A real spool is only ~$100, so shop around. Jegs & Summit sell them. For more info, read this thread.
The ignition module is on the driver's wheelwell and is identified by the color of the plastic grommet where the wires go in.
I highly advise against welding your spider gears together or putting in a spool unless you are just going to run this truck at the drags. The reason a differental has spider gears is to allow the wheels to travel at different speeds when going around a corner.
If you really want positraction look around for a posi unit and swap it out. It takes about an hour, and should cost used about $325.00 in good condition.
