460hp Superduty Centurion - 1986 (f-350)
I just picked up a 1986 Ford F-350 Centurion Conversion (1-Ton Crewcab front cab mated to a Bronco rear body).
I have one question - there is a hood scoop on the hood, and it says "460HP SUPERDUTY" on it. Does this engine really crank out 460HP from the factory conversion?
I did a search on the forums, putting in 460HP and 460 HP and really didn't find anything that helped. From what I remember, the oder 460's didn't put out much more than 380 hp or something like that, in the old police intercepters - and that was earlier than the 80's.
The engine in it was brand new, but it has been sitting since 1996 - unfired, and unfinished - due to a death of the previous owner. It is locked up, so I will be pulling it down before I do and cleaning it up before firing it over. I have drained out the oil and found some water in the crankcase, clear - not from the radiator. Must be from condensation? Anyway, I put a gallon and a half of diesel fuel into the crankcase and will follow that up with some Kroil when I get some (good stuff for engines that have been sitting for a while, hard to find though) - both in the crankcase and in the plug holes.
I am not new to the 460 engine, have been through about 5 of them over the years. I am partial to the 6.9 and 7.3 non turbo Diesels.
Hope everybody is having a great 4th of July weekend!
The Kroil isn't in yet, but I started in on it a bit yesterday. I pulled the spark plugs, four look brand new, two are wet and two have some surface rust on them. I sprayed a liberal amount of the WD-40 into the cylinders for now.
I pulled the carb - an edelbrock 1411 750cfm performer series with automatic choke - corroded in the throat with the butterflys stuck shut. It also has an edelbrock performer intake, same corrosion and so forth there too. I went to the edelbrock site and they have a 469HP ford 460 set up that has similar components. Maybe this truck had something like that new from the Centurion conversion and that is why the 460HP is on the hood scoop?
Anybody have information or installed this set up - the Edelbrock Performer RPM Power Package for the Ford 460? It is found at this site:

We can rebuild her, we can make her better than new... I am even more excited about pulling the engine down now and seeing what kind of goodies are in it. I am thinking that it had the whole mess - cam, oversize pistons, wonder what type of heads are in it etc. I think I can save most of it, the spark plugs with the rust on them only had surface rust - not really pitted yet. Fingers are crossed...
I am going to a sweat this weekend but next weekend I will pull the heads. I can't remember if I can pull the oil pan with the engine in the truck on an 86 F-350, anybody know right off? I remember jacking up an engine one time, can't remember if it was a 460 or what it was to get the oil pan out but putting it back was a b*tch. Looks like tight clearance with the front cross member. I could possibly do this with the block in the truck - if I can get the oil pan off and the pistons out I can try a good honing on it and see if that cleans it up. I have an engine hoist so I might just back it off the flatbed a bit and pull the engine anyway.
In the meantime, color me ford blue/grey excited!
It had a brand new engine partially installed in it in 1996 when the owner passed away - an unfinished installation - it has never even been fired. I think that it is worth pulling down and trying to save, I have had some experience with old frozen & stuck engines in the past. Always a thrill when I can make them run again... I will pull the heads and intake off and then make a decision on pulling the block after I see what I am dealing with here.
I guess this thread should be moved over to the engine section for proper attention...
