What's under that tarp?
It's just about midnight here. Just got home after 3 days off island. Some clients of mine gave us a certificate good for 2 nights in a lodge up towards the mountains that divide Washington State East and West. We used it for our one year wedding anniversary. Well yesterday I went out for coffee while she relaxed in the spa (not my cup of steam). Happened to meet an old guy there who it turns out has a '35 ford 1 1/2 ton he wants to sell. It's under his porch and runs etc etc. Well that afternoon we stopped in to visit him. It was nice enough, older restoration, 12' script stakebed, original engine... But in the end he wanted 10 grand, so we visited a while longer , then hit the road. Ok, this morning before we left I called on a CL ad over across the pass on the dry side of the state, ok across 2 passes. It's late so I'll just give you a glimpse and show you the rest of it in the morning. I was talking to the guy from the bathroom in the hotel and seeing if he could email more photos and my wife came in with a handwritten note saying 'tell him we can stop by today by taking the scenic route home" ... Best wife ever. Details tomorrow.
1/2 ton. Over a 40 year period I have owned maybe 30 old ford trucks, but only one was a half ton. That was a '49 about 30 years ago. So now I have another half ton. I have become very fond of the 46-47 as I've worked on the 2 ton. About 3 weeks ago I sold an original semi-restored '65 Toyota landcruiser pickup with a 7' box for 20,000.00. I had about 15,000.00 of debt I wanted to get rid of, which I did. I just had to spend some small part of it on another project. After all, next winter will be here before you know it........Here's some details. The guy who I bought it from was the 3rd owner. It was a Scott Paper Co. truck #43. Original v8, stuck as usual. One head and intake is off and it doesn't look too bad in there. He has all the parts, but someone stole the radiator
. Not sure what the buttons do or if they are for the radio or the heater. Floors not too good, doors are excellent. Bed sides very good, steel bed floor intact. Yes the fenders are trashed, but it came with 2 excellent front fenders and a really nice driver's side rear, so I need a pass side rear, or I'll fix it. There's also a grill and a bumper he thought was a rear? Cab corners perfect, seat needs recover, but not bad. 3 speed trans seems to shift. Roof is oilcanned pretty bad, All headliner and related cardboard id very nicely intact. It has 2 original hubcaps and one newer stainless, but all 4 original wheels and that cool spare tire holder with the loop over the tire. Has a shredded flat on driver's front side but I went outside last night and scouted up some 700-16 traction tires and various 16" rims. They will go on the back and the 6.50s on the rear will become the fronts. Ok, time for me to go out and drag the tires and wheels together. I plan to pick it up this week and continue on another 100 miles to pick up a couple thousand board feet of salvaged lumber to fill an order back at home. I need it to be sitting high on proper tires, so it looks good rolling down the road on the trailer. This will be a handsome mixed load, I will bring my camera for sure. On the way home yesterday were were passed by a Snohomish Co. Sherrif's dept f150 4x4 doing well over 90 mph. This was right before the Stillaguamish bridge where the horrible mudslide had just happened. We didn't know of it til this morning's news.

a bit off topic, but since your running a saw mill. i cut 34 ceder logs this winter, eastern size ceder logs, 12inch too 4inch. i want to board up a ceder walk in closet, about 15 feet by 12 feet. anyway i can calculate how many boards i will get once sawed,i would rather have more than less. here a picture just because we like pictures.
Yes we love the pictures! So you can skid logs with a snow machine? Do you haul them to the mill on a sled? I think the winter is the time to move wood in your part of the country. In our little slice of the world, the winter is a sea of mud and tough to move anything. The western red cedar we have out here is good wood for a lot of purposes, but it doesn't have the great aromatic smell of the Eastern stuff. Not sure if you ever said where you live. Looks cold!
i pilling them in a small clearing. where hopefully i can backin with my 42 ford next spring.to haul them about 1/2 mile to my neighbors .were going to get a portable sawmill .its about -2 ferinheight this morning, weather station says we will be gething another storm this week. we got 18 inches at st patrick and an other foot thursday. its been a long cold winter here in easter quebec,i,m on the gaspe pinninsula.

There are ways to calculate the board footage from logs, but we bought the mill to saw old beams into boards. I have sawn some logs for sure, but it's real easy to tell you will get 12) 1x12s at 7/8" thick from a 12 x 12 beam. Wish I was more helpful. Are you done working on the 2 ton for the season? Had a friend do a new cab corner from some scrap 18 gauge yesterday. He's a retired body man and he made it look easy. The corner had been folded up from hitting something years ago and held about a shovel full of dirt. All the other sheet metal was good. Maybe the flood washed it all clean....
oh yeah! some guys are awsome with sheet metal. i seen a guy make a rear fender for my brothers 56 chevrolet 210. all one piece, and no cutting or welding while shaping. not quit done ,hopefully i will have a few more pictures too post early next week. that would be it for this year, then i will be on lookout for door parts and frame parts. my frame had a hard life! and watch what you guys are all up too.
picked up the half ton! It was an epic journey. 1 1/2 hours each way on the ferry and then 3 hours over the pass. Motel, junk food, wake up and headed home. The flag at half mast is at the exit for Darrington and Oso, where the mudslide was. My wife offered to come and help and be company. We actually had a blast. Many odd things happened. It's always an adventure! As soon as we got home today I went about pounding out the worst of the dents even though I wont be using the fenders that are on it. I can't help myself and I will be looking at it for about 9 months before I start on it, as I'm knee deep in my 2 ton.....
Looks like a good little truck! I'm kinda surprised you went for the half ton though!
That slide in Oso is a terrible thing... I've got a buddy that lives a few miles east of there and he knew a couple of the people that were killed.
Anyways, back to happier topics. Sounds like you had fun on the trip, Eastern Wa is one of my favorite places!

Always liked the jailbars, but the trucks I've owned over the years were either just under or over the jailbar years. Looks like i'm into them for the foreseeable future. Sam I am with you on Eastern Washington. Both my wife and I have loved it all our lives. We are pretty tied to our jobs on Orcas, but in five or ten years, don't be surprised if our address changes. Never a big fan of half tons, but I have the one ton '59 diesel and the 2 ton '47 and the 1 1/2 ton '37. I have the heavies covered and as we all know, when the time comes to sell something off, a good running 1/2 ton will 'fly off the lot', as they say. Until then it looks like a handy little rig for a run into town for pizza and beer.
