Buying a used plow for my 02 cab and chassis. Donor truck is an 05 f550 can and chassis. Dealer told me that I needed different push plates (truck mount) after 04. I thought I heard though that ford carried the cab and chassis style frame over a few years? Trying to decide whether to wait an extra day and get the push plates off the 05, or if I need to get new ones from the dealer for $600 instead. Any input is appreciated!
What type of plow are you running Jeb? I know the 250's and 350's went to the new front axle with coild springs in '05. I too, am not sure on the cab and chassis though, sorry no help there.
The front end of the 450-550 cab chassis also received the new coil spring front suspension, new radius arms, new front axle, new steering linkage, new steering gear, and new front frame design in 2005.
The differences in the front frame sections between 99-04 versus 05-07 are as follows:
1. Since the front leaf springs were eliminated, the front leaf spring eyelet hangars were also eliminated. This change might effect any preformed brackets and hardware used to attach a snow plow that was originally designed for the 99-04 leaf sprung chassis.
2. For 2005, Ford also revised the manner in which BlockerBeamTM attached to the mounting brackets, which themselves were redesigned as they were no longer used in conjunction with front leaf spring hangars. Ford said "The BlockerBeamTM is now welded to its frame mounting brackets, making a one-piece assembly. The new one-piece assembly is attached to the frame with removable fasteners." Since it is one piece, the bracketry and the beam are removed for the installation of snow plow attachment hardware.
3. As a side note, Ford also said "Warning: Removing the BlockerBeam without installing snowplow attachment hardware may effect air bag deployment in a crash. Do not operate the truck unless either the BlockerBeam or snowplow attachment hardware is installed on the vehicle."
4. For 2005, the front end of the frame was stiffened by extending the boxed section of the frame rearward of the engine crossmember with gussets that tied the top and bottom flanges of the frame with the web section of the engine crossmember by weldment.
So, long story short, the chassis cab frames did change along with the pick up frames for the 2005 model year. These changes are not nearly as radical as the new front frame section changes made in 2008, but they are changes that could effect how ready made brackets intended for the previous design might mount.
I have been running a 9' Curtis on my 02 DRW. I've never cared for it, but it came with the truck so I used it. This year it has been nothing but trouble. Out of 12 plow able events (1"+) it has gone down 3 times and not been able to finish the storm. That puts a serious crimp in our style, as we do 6 commercial lots and 50 driveways. To lose 1/2 our plowing capabilities is so frustrating. My plow frame (truck side) snapped when I caught the corner on an apron. I decided that instead of buying a new mount at $850 installed I would buy a good used Fisher. We have an 8 footer on Smokie, and I love it. Anyway, I ordered the new push plates and picked up the new (used) plow today. Hopefully I have better luck than the Curtiss gave me.
Pardon my off topic question, but Jason, how's your truck been doing with the snow? I haven't had a chance to get on here much the last 3 weeks, but I've thought of your injector troubles several times while I've been out plowing and wondered how you were making out.
It's been running decently well. It still has a weird idle after I have been running it a little hard and then let off, it will romp a little, almost so low that it seems like it is going to stall for a few seconds then pick back up, and be fine. I am pretty sure that ia a tuning issue that I have spoken with Jody and Justin about, and they seem to think he just needs to ask for a little more ICP and it will smooth out. In order to fix it, I either have to pull the F5 and send it Jody for a re-burn or I have to upgrade to the F6. If I pull the F5, I can't run the truck because of the single shots, so I don't want to do that and have the truck down 3-5 days waiting for the turn around during snow season. I think I am going to go ahead and upgrade to the F6 but until the snow money comes in, my budget is really kind of tight, especially with $4.09 a gallon. I have put at least $600 in that pig the last 10-12 days.
