hey guys!,
so went today and bought a 1993 ranger 4x4 ext cab 4.0!
so runs good some bad handy work that i need to fix but truck has plenty of power and good handling so i need some help with some things.
issue 1- 4x4 not engaging. the light by the push buttons does not come on and you dont hear the "clicking" of the relay trying to engage. so whats the problem and how do i fix it?
issue 2- when clutch is fully depressed and you go to shift(this is only sometimes) you can feel and hear it grind just for a quick sec. and forget about down shifting you cant do that without slowing down. so maybe new clutch?
issue 3- at 65 the vehicle does shake a little otherwise but pretty smooth. any tips on how to smooth it out? maybe new ball joints? tighten some stuff up maybe? appreciate all answers thanks!!
also truck has 145k miles
P.s just found out while driving it when you have the lights on and you turn your brights on the whole instrument cluster goes out (just the lights) when you hold the lever back for high beams they stay on? Also the switch for the lights works but you can't control the dim setting any relationship with the brights shutting off the instrument panel Illumination?
Seems like step #1 is to stop at an auto parts supply store and have them scan the ECM for trouble codes. If they don't have a scanner that works for your truck (I forget when manufactures switched from OBED-I to OBED-II), let me know and I will give one of my OBED-I scanners. Post the codes here and we can help you get started on what needs to be done to get things sorted out.
ok some new updates so on the 4x4 i did the self check on the 4x4 cm and the lights flashed but when you go and press the buttons on the dash there is dead silence so any ideas about this?
ok guys new update! so took the dash bezel off and looked at the 4x4 switch some of the wires where slightly unplugged. looked like someone was trying to yank it off so i plugged them all back in and now i can hear the 4x4 cm clicking but still no 4x4 so whats next? magnetic clutch? 4x4 shift motor? ideas! thanks!
Ford never had an "OBD-I", they did have EEC-IV which is what the OP has. As such, there are two ways to pull codes that do not require a scan tool thus making it cheap and easy.
ok some more new updates went and checked if the shift motor was getting power and it isnt. back probed the 2 wires coming out of the 5 pin grey connecter and had no power coming from them so is this a pretty certain sign that my module is toast? it has power i did the self check and it flashes so could it be the 4x4 control module even if it has power. its not putting the power out so need some help! thanks.
ok guys so new updates! went ahead to check the shift motor and it was bad as expected so got a knew one from oreilys and popped it in and Bam! 4x4! i didnt think that would fix it because i thought the 4x4cm was not sending power guess i was wrong! so now my main issue is getting this electrical figured out gonna look at the website Rockledge provided and get more updates now again what would a newer tranny do for me for speed? at 65mph im hitting like 2500rmps i would like to get that down to around 2000-2200 would a tranny from a 95-00 work? just curious for ideas thanks!
