Hi everyone. I'm looking at buying a 2014 F150 4x4 Supercrew weather ordering it or finding it on a lot....(In the next few weeks)
Trying to do the homework on the ecoboost vs a 5.0. I will be doing a so-so amount on towing a toybox with quads in there, about a 20 footer. One weekend a month to the sand dunes, about a 500 mile round trip. I've had more Ford trucks that I'd like to admit too (good or bad?) 2006 F150, 2008 F350 diesel and so on. So I have some F150 experience (some).
It will be a daily driver....16 miles each way to work, maybe 35's down the road.
It just feels like the 5.0 "might" be better than a Ecoboost.
Also It does not feel right that all the dealers are pushing the Ecoboost like no tomorrow. Cannot tell if it's a good thing or not.
Thank you for your advice, input and your time, Robert.
I tow upwards of 11k lbs (hay, fertilizer, cattle and steel) throughout the spring and summer months. I have installed Bilstein shocks and struts, Firestone airbags and have tunes from 5 Star and Southern Speed. I just installed the Wagner intercooler which according to dyno runs should give me another 5 rwhp and 50 rw ftlbs torque. Truck pulls these loads easy as pie. Running the stock tune it's kinda doggy.
If you just tow occassionally and want a smoother ride the ecoboost is your engine. The 5.0 doesn't come with the max tow package so you dont get the larger radiator and the torque on the 5.0 comes in higher but it will still pull what you want.
I was in it for a 5.0 all the way while I was looking for a truck last December......from all I`ve read the ecoboost is way to go for towing but despite the touted ecoboost mpg claims the 5.0 seems to beat the ecoboost in the real world hands down on mpg.....extremely happy with my truck and would have no worries towing a 20ft. trailer with quads on it.....we have a similar commute mine is about 39 roundtrip and have been averaging 17 mpg in heavy to light rush hour traffic (Phoenix)
Well, I only do seasonal hauling (A couple loads of mulch in the spring) so max tow wasn't a breaking point for me. I went with the 5.0 strictly based on the ability to put a cat back exhaust system and get that V-8 note out of the tailpipes!

LOL! I did not even think about that.
I'm not a big turbo fan (worked at Garrett for 20 years) and I do not like the way the California dealers are cramming the V6 down our throats. Most 150's (80%+) at the dealers around here are V6 Turbo. Just kinda rub's me the wrong way.

They're going to stock what sells. From what I gather the take rate for the EcoBoost engine is nearly 50%, which would probably make it higher than any of the other offerings. Dealers have nothing to gain by stocking inventory that won't sell.
Tom,
He worked at Garrett. Does he need to explain himself?
LOL!!!!! ^^^^ I had a 2008 F350 Diesel with a B/W turbo's. Had a lot of friends with the 2007 and below F350 Diesel w/ the Garrett-Mexico turbo....what a joke. Back at Garrett we would blow them up between 45,000rpm up to 85,000rpm...in the lab's....no b.s. They 100% have their place in life but not with me.
Looking for the best choice for a trouble free motor for my needs......wish me luck on that one....lol
I bought my 2011 used, but looked at both the EcoBoost, and the 5.0. I rarely tow at all, but will haul firewood, dirt etc. I have a vary good friend back home that went from his 09 F150 4x2 (I believe 5.4) to a new 2013 EcoBoost, and at almost 9K still hasn't seen the mileage that it he thought it would get.
My 2011 5.0 4x2 Supercrew get better mileage, and for the most part is just a daily driver. And as mention from another FTE member, I too want to ad a cat back exhaust system, and get some rumble, and the 5.0 has a sweet growl (Stock) just getting on it to whip a kid with an import.
I am in the same place as you. I have been trolling on the site for almost a month now. Reading what everyone has to say. Questions and comments. I am also looking for a new 2014 f150 and I tow about 4-5 times a year a few quads and tree stands for hunting. I believe total weight was about 4500 lbs. From what I see and read I am leaning towards the 5.0 motor. Yes the ecoboost may tow more. But I am sure ithe 5.0 can tow that load with no issues. It just seems there are a few more bugs and issues with the ecoboost then the 5.0

That's how I feel about the "bug's".
Once again, But I do not know about the Ecoboost.
Trying to learn more about it on here.

They are both great motors. And for a daily driver and occasional tow of 2000-4500LBS any motor will handle the job well. From searching, reading, and researching the 5.0 seams to burn some oil. Not all motors but some. That's seems to be the only complaint I have seen a few times. The eco seems to have a few more little bugs or issues. What to do??? I guess I will continue to read and educate myself. And eventually test drive both motors. Then I hope to make a better decision. But as of today, I am leaning more towards the 5.0
