With the kids passed out in a sugar coma and the wife resting I decided to go out and play with my new CB. I also took time to check all the fluids in my truck.
I notice my oil is low about 2.5 qts. I changed my oil about 5 weeks ago and confirmed it was full at the time.
I've driven about 2k miles in that time and I haven't noticed any issues, the starts and idles are great.
Being this is my first diesel, is it natural for a diesel to use oil? I've been chasing a smoke issue, but it doesn't smell like oil and my coolent level is good.
All engines consume a certain amount of oil, but 2.5 quarts in 2,000 miles isn't normal for a 7.3 PSD. Is the smoke you've been chasing bluish in color?
Before going to deep into it, when you did the oil change did you recheck the level after running it for a few minutes?
You don't suddenly have an extra 2.5 qts of coolant, do you? If it isn't leaking it, and it isn't burning it, that's the only other place I can think of for it to go.
I thought I checked the oil... Anything is possible, but I inspected the coolent and there is no oil or diesel in it. Nice pink color of the mixed Cat ELC in the bottle.
I'll just keep a close look in it. I have a 800 mile run at the end of the week.
My truck runs great, but I still can't leave well enough alone. I like to tinker with my truck as much as possible.
Injector Orings will help you lose oil. I'd top it off and keep checking it, just because that seems like a lot all at once. Injector o rings will force your oil into the fuel system, and then burn it. You can tell by the condition of your fuel filter. It'll turn black if you have bad O rings. I wouldn't worry about it unless the level keeps dropping though. Good luck
Some engines just naturally run down to a certain point and then stop. In other words, you may add oil until its full on the dip stick but the engine throws out a quart or so and then maintains the level. My father had a truck that would always throw some oil when it was just filled and "settle" to a specific amount where it would stay for next 5k miles. Just another thought on what might be going on.
Check the oil pan bolts. I was losing oil in the front of the pan.
The pan was changed out 2yrs ago. Just checked it on the last oil change. Which was about 2 weeks ago.
Take a flashlight and inspect the V of the engine behind the fuel filter housing. Several large and deep pockets cast into the block that can trap a large quantity of oil.
Oh there is no oil leak. I fixed all of those over the summer. I originally had several, but there is no oil leak.
As previously stated I didn't change the filter with this most recent oil change. I might now have let everything settle enough so I will just keep checking the level over the next few weeks.
The oil pan bolts are good, dip stick is fine, valley is bone dry.
I will check the fuel filter tomorrow! I've wondered about my oRings for a while so that might answer my questions....
