I just came back from a long trip and during the 400 miles drive I started to hear noise coming from my differential - kind of like a constant high gear loud noise. I will hear this noise when I start to accelerate and it will only gets louder and louder as I go faster and faster. I had a pinion seal leaked fixed last week and I checked the fluid and it is full. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Sounds like who ever put it in didn't properly torque the pinion gear. It's that big nut u see when u take off the drive line. If that's to tight or to loose u can get a lot of noise from it diff. Most likely it's loose from the noise ur describing. So look up how to torque and set that nut. Then run it and hopefully no damage was done. Goodluck
I had it done at the dealer.... what kind of damage will it caused if it is not torqued right? I am not sure if I want to go back to them and ask the same tech to fix it.
A lot. Like the main bearing and or the ring and pinion gears.. and now definitely take it back to the dealer if there the ones that put it in and didn't torque it right it's all on them. So take it to them and they have to fix it for free and if there was any damage done to the diff because the tech didn't torque it right they have to fix that for free as well. Trust me iv been going to school to be a auto tech and we learned all about this and my instructor pounds this in are head so we don't mess up a costumers car and lose the shop money lol
Does the noise go away on decel? To get at the seal they had to pull the yoke off. The nut that holds the yoke on is the same nut that pulls down the crush sleeve to the correct amount of preload. It takes about 200 ft.pds. or more to crush that sleeve some more. All they needed to do was use a new nut and torque it down to 100-125 ft.pds and nothing should change. You need to take this back and insist on them checking that the nut was torqued back down. Tight enough to hold the pre-load, but not too tight to have changed the pre-load. You are looking at major damage if that nut is not tight.
The noise does not go away when decel. It only goes away when I come to a stop. I will definitely take it back to them and demand them to check the torque of the nut.
Some of them have a tin slinger type deal behind the yoke. If that thing is rubbing that very well could be your noise. Pinion preload when wrong, usually varies in pitch at different speeds and will be silent on decel.....or at least quieter. Maybe something rubbing on DS?.....let us know what they find.
I will be taking the truck in tomorrow morning and update you on what they find. Yes the pitch does go higher when I accelerate faster. It does get quieter when I took foot off the gas but it still has the humming noise until I almost come to a stop.
