Clatter on start up

95 4.9, ONly for the first few seconds on starting, it seams as the oil presure is next to nothing. It only last a couple of seconds but it anoys me and concenrs me that I might be doing some damage. I recall another post about this, which gave a Ford part number and a fix. I've tried a search but came up empty.

Thanks in advance!
Stan

Its not unusual to hear your valvetrain clattering on cold startups. I hear it sometimes on mine. It has to do with your selection of oil filter most of the time. Fram is notorious for causing this noise. I switched to Mobil 1 filter and rarely hear the noise, even on cold startups.

That is most likely the oil dripping back down to the pan when you shut the engine off, because the valve in the filter is not working properly. When you start it up again, the oil has to make its way back up to the lifters, which get the oil last, and therefor the clattering for a few seconds.

I would get a new filter, but don't worry too much about it, unless it sounds really severe.

the recall i believe is a new oil filter adapter to screw into the block which has a check valve in it. i have the same noise it sounds like a 4.0L explorer starting up. i have tried many different oils, filters, and additives and its pissing me off. i also have a horrific valve train clatter at idle that sounds like a diesel and a serious lifter tap on acceleration.

Same prob. on my 302- I don't think that it is that big a problem- BTW- I use motorcraft filters. FL1A for life!! Buy yeah, i t is the lack of oil pressure to the lifters. They hold like 13 LBS, and are last to get oil. I'm fairly sure that after 3 or 4 turns of the crank, your bearings have some pressure. I have heard of people driving these things with no oil pressure for days (loose filter). I really don't think that you have anything to worry about.

I've wanted to add a Moroso oil accumulator for years now to prevent dry starts, but they're just SOOOO expen$ive and bulky.

FWIW, on my truck I prevent this on cold starts by cranking the engine a few times before setting the choke. I just crank until the oil gauge needle starts to come up, then give the starter a rest, depress the throttle and crank to start. This might only work if the truck sits for a few days between starts like mine does. I never get the clatter when its warm, but sometimes after a long hot drive it comes back after 2-3 hours of sitting.
