2006 Expy 4x4 5.4. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my wife's Expy engine was making a whining noise. The noise would change it's pitch as the engines rpms changed. Was thinking that it might be a pulley or pump of some sort. Then tonight I noticed a puddle of what looked like transmission oil under her truck, it was red in color. The puddle was at the front of the expy on the drivers side maybe a foot in from the inside edge of the drivers side front tire. I took a quick look under the hood and the fan motor look wet like oil was sprayed on it and also under the air intake looked wet. Not sure if these things are related or not. Haven't had a chance to do any more looking under the truck because it was dark once we got home. Please let me know your thought. Tomorrow once I get a better look at it and if I see anything interesting I'll post about it. Thanks for your help.
If the power steering return hose has developed a leak it will suck air and cause a whine/moan noise from the pump. It will leak but only when the engine is off. Have you checked the power steering fluid level?
So had a chance to take a better look at things and this is what I found. The puddle was from a whole in the transmission fluid cooling line. The line was rusted at the bend where it goes up to the radiator. Went to the local auto parts store and picked up some tubing and clamps and did a temp fix. Did notice that the steering fluid is low and it is defiantly the steering pump that is whining . Thanks Alloro for point me in that direction. Going to top it off and hopefully that will stop the pump from whining.
