Hey ya'll, don't need header advice, I've already picked up some hedman 89260. Truck has a 400. I'm needing to order the mandrel bends for my exhaust which I'll build. Mounting the headers up to the engine they look to have the collectors pointing down at about a 45* angle and ending about the middle of the transmission.
It's going to be a while before I get the motor in the chassis and would like to get all my exhaust pieces ordered but I'm not sure if I'll need a bend coming right off the collectors to get the exhaust tucked back up where it needs to be. The other bends I know, I've done it enough times
Pics of the headers mounted up and installed would be very helpful, even better if the exhaust is done and attached!
I would have the engine and tranny installed BEFORE I went ahead with the exhaust. Eye balling it or guessing what you're gonna need for bends and such is asking for trouble. I have the same year and 2wd but I used Black Jack which I believe is Appliance now ( Somebody chime in here if I am wrong) and they exit level with engine at about the back of the engine. If you want to take a chance good luck. Just saying.
I've done quite a few exhausts, and feel confident on what exactly is needed after the header hookup. My only question was really if I'll be able to go straight back from the headers or if an "S-bend" header extension will be needed or a 45* to get the pipes back level with the frame after hooking up to the headers. After that I got it.
I'd like to get all the pieces will I have the cash in hand, and before my wife finds something better to spend it on.
If the collectors point straight at the trans crossmember I might just build a new one with dual humps like the fox mustangs had...
I've been told these Hedmans will come out level with the frame, but looking at them bolted to the motor on the stand I don't see how that's possible!
How does the tip sound? I did a few square and oval large tips on my Lightning and they always sounded funny. Gave the exhaust a funny echo
That's quite different than what I pictured HIO. If no one posts up some pics of the Hedman 89260s I suppose I will have to wait until I get the engine dropped in.
There is some online hot rod shop that has a 2.5 mandrel bent kit for like $140. Been posted on here a cpl times.
That would be me and Speedway Motors. They're not only hot rods but racing parts as well. The Smith family also has an awesome museum if you ever get a chance to visit.
highvoltj- The headers don't look level with the frame, look angled like you mentioned. One good thing about them however is they are ball and socket collector flange and you may end up with enough play right there to get your piping tucked up.
