1949 F1 Brakes Adding Self Adjusters
I have a 1949 F1 which I am trying to modify brakes for saftey reasons. I have added dual master cylinder and still have manual drum brakes. I want to add self adjusters to all 4 wheels. From information found on the internet at different web sites I was told to use Napa spring and hardware and self adjuster kits for a 1969 F1 or 1966 F1 depending on which web site. I have tried both but neither seem to work. right now on the front there is a square metal box around spindle that interferes with self adjuster and spring. There is no tension on spring because of black bo
dust shield) ? Does anyone have any experience in this area that could help me. In would appreciate it very much. This is my first post on any web site. Thank You,
1949 F-1 joe
The shield really isn't necessary, if you remove it there's just a little more chance of brake dust getting in the bearings. But I can't see why it's hitting? The cable should loop around the inside of the shoes, well away from it. Also even if you remove it, the hub is nearly as large, but at least not square.
Your doing great so far. I can't remember what the original brake set up looked like and I only vaguely remember that dust shield box thingy. I installed disc brakes on the front and swapped a 9" diff into the rear. On my 9" I did have to upgrade to self-adjusting hardware though.
From what I remember, I think Ford went to self-adjusting brakes in 1966 on the cars and the trucks started getting the self-adjusting hardware in 1969...or something like that. I remember being slightly annoyed because you had to buy both a spring kit and a hardware kit to get all the parts you needed and then there was a bunch of stuff left over (which actually came in handy when I rebuilt the brakes on this old Massey-Ferguson tractyor recently).
I'm with Ross, remove that dust shield box thingy and see what happens.
