really dumb question

Let me preface this by saying all of my previous cars have been far newer than this truck. I think I know the answer but before I just start pouring oil I wanted to ask where should I add it? I have just drained all the oil and need to refill. The engine is an 8ba.

Thank you fou humoring me,

There should be a tube rising from the front of the intake manifold with a breather cap in it . Remove the breather cap and pour oil in there . I would suggest that you invest in a manual for your new toy . They are available from a number of the sponsors listed at the top of the page .

Look for this. Unfortunately, these older vehicles don't have a "710" cap.

The only dumb question is the one that you don't ask. Many of us including myself started with no knowledge about these trucks. Oldmerc has very good advice, If you pic up a repair manual and possibly a parts manual it will help you tremendously in understanding how these trucks go together. Along with the help from all the nice folks here on FTE, there isn't anything that you wont be able to do. Welcome to the site. or maybe I should say welcome home.

Not a dumb question, the dumb thing to do is remove the cap off of an unknown part of the truck, like the radiator cap and pour oil in it. Yes some people have done it. Any questions , just ask here and help will arrive .____Wellcome __JIM__

Very smart to ask a question like that instead of making a wrong guess! I have had my share of stubborn moments when I didn't want to sound "stupid" and then went and did something really stupid because I didn't ask...

I had a buddy who took his car to a lube drive-through. They drained his transmission and added five quarts of oil and a new filter. The repair bill was on their dime once he finally convinced the manager why the car drove in but couldn't drive out. The lube tech eventually admitted that he wondered why the oil was red. They did the right thing: had it towed and payed to have his transmission rebuilt.

Asking questions prevents "dumb-ness"

I bought a 289 Mustang once where the Smog Air Pump valves to the exhaust manifolds were unhosed just sitting there vertically. My friend who DIDN'T ask the question, decided that's where you add the oil.......

In the '60's, my buddy's family had a Vauxhall (4-cyl Brit car) that had a leaky radiator. The husband told the wife (who knew NOTHING about cars) to fill the radiator before she drove it that day. She put a garden hose in the oil fill and turned it on until it overflowed. An hour later we had the car on the road, I don't remember how...
