5.4 hesitates surges

03 supercrew 5.4. I've been having problems climbing hills. I'm on a trip and the truck surged fron do then to drive and stopped. Let it sit for 30 mins or so and it was good. Drove another 500 miles ans started again going up some hills. The first time it was 110 out and the 2nd it was 90. I'm pretty sure it's a cop but of course no cel. It does not seem to of over heated either.
Can the cops overheat? Do you recommend a diagnostic, will this show up if no cel has show?
Thanks

Going to get a scan gauge 2 this am. Could I be experiencing vapor lock?

You have nothing to go on at the moment but guessing.
It's not vapor lock because it's a 2 pipe feed and return system not a single pipe like a carb system.
A 2 pipe system cannot vapor lock.
It could be the fuel pump but it's still guessing until proven.
Good luck.

Bluegrass 7, thanks for answering about the vapor lock. I thought it would be rare. You explained it.
Well no codes,no pending codes and no issue today. I'm still guessing at coil pack or fuel pump. Guess ill wait and see what happens.

Ok, changed the fuel filter and made it back home with no issues. I never could duplicate the temp driving, I drove at night to be cooler. It did get to 95 with the truck at 205, is this a normal range for temp. Other times it was 180's to 198. I'm going to blame this on the Lucas fuel cleaner, I think it worked and caused the filter to get dirty. Don't really know.

Yes, the temp could go to 205 at times.
The thermostat is a mechanical device and may not open at the same point every time and can vary with age..
It should stay above about 193 +/- most of the time.
The colder the motor runs the more fuel it will use.
The CHT is part of the fuel control system.
It monitors the system temp the same as it does for cold starting signal in put.
There is always something some one never says that makes it more difficult to help.
Fuel additives change the fuel makeup until it gets used up and diluted with new gas.
You ought to see what happens to lawn tractors and mowers when additives are used.
The carbs are almost all non adjustable now so you can't adjust for it.
Good luck.
