A4wd yes, 4hi and 4lo no.

not if it's the right place, but I need your help, my expedition 97, has problems with the 4x4, turning the selector only works A4WD, 4HI or 4lo but nothing happens. Change the selector and the relay under the dash and does exactly the same, the previous relay was damaged, had loose connections. Any suggestions, all are welcome.

You won't hear anything when switching between A4WD and 4H because it is an electrical switching, not a mechanical one. However, with the 4H to 4L it is a mechanical action and you should definitely hear a clunk. The switch between 4H and 4L will only happen if you're stopped and in neutral. If you're doing that and it still isn't switching, I would start by replacing the shift motor on the back of the transfer case.

And . . . with the brake pedal depressed.

One would hope this is automatic with the gearshift being in neutral!

can you drive all the time with the A4WD? I have noticed this on the selector switch but have no idea what it is for.

It stand for Automatic 4-Wheel Drive. In that position the computer will transfer some of the engine power to the front axle automatically when rear wheel slippage is detected. When there is no slippage engine power is only sent to the rear wheels. To answer your question, yes it is safe to drive in A4WD all the time.

Hi Alloro, just a quick question on the A4WD position. When in this position does the front wheel drive shaft spin all the time or is it the coil clutch pack that engages to cause the front drive shaft to spin?

When in A4wd the front axle is engaged to the front wheels, as a result the front driveshaft spins as the truck moves. Only when a difference is detected between the front and rear driveshafts rotational speeds (wheel slip) does the clutch engage to apply power to the front driveshaft.

Thank you. Found out the transfer case was stuck in 4WD LO. Pulled the shift motor and the shaft was in 2H. Pulled the plug on the transfer case and aluminum metal pieces and plastic were in the bottom of the transfer case. So that means the shift fork broke. Going to remove case and fix. Thanks for your help.

Winter is definitely coming. It cold here in the Seattle Area. When I pulled the drain plug on the XFER case there was only about 3 cups of oil in it and it was black and thick. I hope there is no other damage than the range fork. I have a question however. Is it correct that the clutch pack in the Transfer case only engages and disengages when wheel slip occurs in the A4WD mode for the front shaft and the 4H and 4L are mechanically locked? The reason I am asking is because I don't use the A4WD and if the clutch pack is only used in this mode, then if the discs are worn out maybe I want worry about them. Your thoughts?

The clutch is used to some extent in all modes. When in 4hi or 4 low the clutch will do an occasional pulsed release to keep the front and rear axles from binding on harder surfaces when tires are not quite the same size.
