Any help will be appreciated. We are assembling a motor for a 56 F1100 from pieces.
1. I have seen the 292 engines with two pulley styles. One has the fan mounted to the water pump. The other has the fan higher on a seperate mount. Is the one mounted highr for "super duty" trucks? Not sure which way a standard light duty truck should be set up.
2. If we use rams horns, how do we deal with the dip stick?
3. Did the 56 truck version of the 292 have a different water pump version or is it just a standard 292 water pump? Any recommendations on who sells new water pumps?
Engine mount pump fan is correct for '56. NAPA and others have them.
Ram horns will need a special bent dipstick tube to clear. Available aftermarket. You could probably modify the original to clear.
Engine for the '56 would most likely been the 272 but 292 works just fine.
And if you're using a car engine, you'll need front engine mount, rear sump oil pan and pickup, bell housing

Thanks a lot for the help!
Be careful if you order a waterpump rebuild kit. There are two different seals. If you get a rebuilt pump you'll be OK. The high version is Not the one you have or need.
The 56 F100 did not offer a 292 but it will fit and work well. 292s & 312s were frequent upgrades to F100s. 272 2 barrels were the factory engines.
Not sure about the Ram Horn manifolds. I wish I had some but haven't found a set cheap. Beware the mercury Y-Block "horns" won't fit.
I have a 54 F100 with 56 Merc 312.I put the front of engine from 54 on 56 312 along with oil pan. I had trouble with oil pressure going away under braking so went back to car front sump pan. Move the oil drain plug to the side and clearance should be OK.
http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/index.html Go here, and look in the reference materials section under the dealer brochures. The 272 used in the F-100 would have been the single barrel carb style with out the high mounted fan.
If you look closely at the brochure above, two of the three 272 engines have the high mount fan. I know 54 and 55 used the high mount fan. This placed the fan in the middle of the radiator for use with a fan shroud.
