1956 F 500 single speed rear axle id and ratio question

briefly saw a 56 f500 parts truck. and looking at possibly using the rear axle. its got the square axle tubes (is that an eaton or rockwell specific thing)??

from what little i looked is that likely to be a 5.83 ratio?? if so it may be slightly better than my 52 f6 2 speed rear end.

just wondering what would have been stock on a 55 f500 single speed rear end.

trying to see if I can justify spending a lot of money for a few parts??

thanks

Not sure which yours is but our 55 F500, "Albatross," has the single-speed Timken C600 and is geared 6.200/1. I think I remember axle housings have a round cross-section.

Can you spin it and count turns?

Edit - the tubes on Albatross' Timken are definitely "square" in cross-section. Fer Sur.

Looks like the 56 single speed used in an F-500 is a Timken D100. Has square-ish tubes. The carrier identification number is A532. Three ratios listed; 5.83, 6.20, and 6.80. Stu

Well. This is a super old thread. And I'm super embarrassed, well maybe only slightly embarrassed that i havent got very far on my 52 F6 project

. The rear axle that i was talking about originally way back when ended up in the scrap yard. The guy wanted a small fortune because it was a 56. ...
he passed away and family scrapped everything.

Anyway
I found a 56 F500 chassis with this same timken? Square tube Axle. 6.20 ratio i think that I will yank my 2 speed axle, 6.60 8.80 ratio axle out and run this single speed 6.20 ratio axle.
Chassis has a 272 yblock that can be parts for someone.
Unfortunately the chassis only has 1 non widow maker wheel.

jmadsen, I have a '56 F500 6.20 in northern Idaho that you can have if interested. My truck is currently at a fix-it shop for an axle swap and I believe that is has 2 non-widowmaker wheels on it.

Owen. I didnt take a picture of the entire axle but if memory is correct there are no bolts on the back side for a removable cover. I think the front has to come off to get inside everything. Guess I dont know much about axles.

Twinstacks. Thank you very much for the offer. If you were closer I would definitely take you up on that. Or at least for the lockring wheels. The axle i found here locally is also 6.2 ratio. Wish it was 5.83 but either way 6.2 is still better than the 6.6 of the 2 speed unit. Plus the ol Stock F6 is probably not ever going to get pushed much over 40 -45 mph.

This axle is on a 56 f500 chassis . Still has 272 and T98 trans attached. Plus maybe a few other parts . The engine is stuck and appears to have some water in the oil pan . Maybe parts for someone down the road.

The thing that kills me that im actually looking for lockring wheels. Years ago i went to an auction out in Kansas and didn't end up buying any complete truck or big parts so when they got to a couple huge piles of old farm truck tires and wheels they sold the entire pile for $1.00. and like an idiot i bid and won. I then spent a few hours digging through the piles and pulled out quite a few sets of lockring wheels with roller tires that looked ok. Hauled them all back home and then after a year or two of storing them decided they needed a new home. Sold them for cheap to a farmer who took all of them for some hay wagons that he had. I was glad to be rid of them but now they are getting slightly harder to find.
Or more likely im just busier now and not out looking as much as i used to.
