I have a 1951 f5 with a timken single speed rear axle. Im wanting to keep the rear axle in my rebuild but I would like a higher gear ratio. Does anyone know of a company where I can get parts and different gears for this axle ? Thanks
To get any reasonable road speed, you will have to swap out that rear end or go with an OD transmission. No significantly lower ratio gears available, so far as I know.
Yes I am planning on a t5 tranny. I just didnt know if just a tranny swap would get me a little more speed .but maybe so. Whats your opinion on that tranny mated with a 312 y block ?
The lowest stock available ratio I know of is a 5.14/1, which when teamed with tall enough tires isn't too bad. Last week I sold my Dana 70HD axle I'd been intending for such a project to a guy for his F-5. It has a 4.56/1 gear set which is better yet. This axle comes from old motor homes and it's spring perches line up about 1/8" off from the originals on each side. These can either be spaced to fit or the perches can be moved that slight amount. A T5 is pretty light duty for an F-5. Stu
I thought about changing axles also but I wanted the same wheel pattern as original . What would be a good tranny to use or just use the 4 speed that is in it now ?
Oh ok thanks for the help. I will search for a dana 70HD . If yall know where one is I would appreciate the help. Thanks yall
Look for old motorhomes on the dodge M400 chassis. The same motorhome would get you the 19.5 tubeless rims. One suggestion is to watch for folks trying to sell 440 motors out of old motorhomes. Don't tell them what you want the wheels or axle for...they think the 440's are made of gold and the rest of the MH is scrap. Let's keep them thinking that.

It should work in an F-4 same as an F-5. I'm gonna call the guy that bought mine to get a better description of what he needed to work out with it. When we talked he had gone through and rebuilt the brake cylinders. Shoes and drums were good. Was happy he found the pieces at Napa. I'll post an update and post the Dana BOM (Bill of Materials) code for the axle. I gave the guy all my records on it too so need to have him read me that number off the sheets I gave him. Stu
Could a guy use the springs from the F4/5 with the Dana rear end, thus not having to move the perches?
A Dana 70 will bolt to the existing springs on the F4 without changes. Spring perches are the same. I can not verify, but I believe the Sterling spring perches are the same width. A cab and chassis should have the correct width. So far as different wheel patterns, you need only a spare for the front axle pattern. You have two spares on the rear axle with the DRW............Unless you're hauling rocks.
A driveshaft modification, if necessary, is not that big a deal. Brake line hook up will require a readily available hydraulic adapter.
