first truck, 86 f250 & rebuild

Bought my first truck a few days ago. I already have a civic, RV, boat, harley, and a scooter so I needed something to haul everything around!

The motor is knocking pretty bad... I rebuilt my 5.0 mustang several years back with lots of help so I am going to tackle the rebuild as a summer project. I found a better condition 351W for $700 (see pics) and am thinking about using that as my rebuild motor and just throwing out the old one (supposedly has lots of problems so I'd rather get rid of it and use another one)

Anyone else here rebuilt their 351? How long did it take? I am a little worried about needing some crazy tools when working on it. I did buy this the other day and am hoping to use to to diagnose the motor and see if it even needs to be rebuilt (

)

thanks for the help!

Welcome to FTE.

That's a good book and I have one myself, but it doesn't cover the 351W or any other Windsor engine.

What you really want is this:

Shoot! I hate when I buy something I don't need. One of the reviews for that book you linked to says the manual only goes to 1980? The engine is a 1989. do you think it would still be a good resource?

I would suspect it's still a useful book but cannot verify that, as

1) I don't have one
2) I don't remember enough details of the Wheezers to know what was changed and when (specifically, when they went to EFI in 1985-86-87).

Others here may know more; you might ask here, too:

This is still a very good book for the basics. It will not have the one piece rear main seal type blocks, and he has a nice little section on cylinder heads and has piston and cylinder head combos and what compression ratio you would end up with, but that's all with the older type heads. Some of the cylinder head info would be valid though, since most engines use the run of the mill heads that came out in 78. He won't have info on the gt40 and other type later heads though.

I would still get it. He has good info on all the little procedures needed to have a successful re-build.
