Have any guys got any ideas how to fix a noisy belt? I have a 96 bronco and I seem to be going through belts. Had one that was noisy so I replaced it and less then 200 miles it has started making noise. My 94 f250 had the same problem but I would get a lot more miles out of a belt. My bronco sat for a year with out a hood or fenders and there is some surface rust on my pulleys could that be the problem? Other then that I only have 60000 on the bronco. Let me know its driving me nuts.
What do you think I should use for cleaner? Could my tensioner be bad? It was loose when I boght the bronco but I tightened it back up and it seems to work. I think while they were stealing the fenders and hood and everything else they started to take the tensioner. I also notice a lot of black residue like its eating my belt. I hate ford belts, like I said I have had this problem before on other ford trucks just not as bad.
I agree with Steve. You definetly need to clean the rust off those pulleys. Some Brake Cleaner and WD-40 should get the rust off. Then you need to coat all the pulleys with belt dressing. It will help the belts stick better. Then make sure your tensioner is tight. Don't overtighten it just look at the gauge on the tensioner and make sure it is in the correct range.
If you can't clean the rust off the pulleys then you will need to pick up some new ones. Also make sure all the pulleys are turning freely. A stuck or close to seized up pullley will make quick work of any new belt. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!
I wouldn't ever spray WD-40 on the pulleys - it contains a LOT of wax, which will just reglaze them. If there's any grease or tar on them, use engine degreaser & hot water before you wire-brush, sandpaper, or sandblast them. Then maybe spray some clearcoat or black paint on them.
So the pulley is not supposed to move at all? I am going to replace my belt and I may need to replace the tensioner along with the idler pulley. The Idler looks as though it was replaced before but it has flat spots on it.
Yes, if the tensioner pulley loosens when you rev the engine its the equivalent of your tires cutting loose from the pavement. Things spin like heck, but they don't move...also drags against the rubber and wears it down faster. In the case of the belt, it is the primary cause of pulley glazing. The rubber sliding across the surface of the pulley tends to make the pulley more susceptable to letting the belt slip. Wears out the belt faster too.
I am not sure if I need to replace the tensioner or not? It is still against the belt but the pulley moves left to right as it turns. It is an automatic tensioner so I thought that the movement is to keep the tension? Could some one explain it a little better? I want to replace it if needed. Does anyone have some pics of changing one?
Is there any difference in brands of tensioner? The Ford part lists for $54 and you can get a Dayco from Advance for $64? Which is weird that the Ford part is cheaper, but Ford lists the Idler pulley for $84 and it is $14 from Advance ? What gives (apparently not the tensior bronco351 )
I went to Local Ford Dealership and they have the Idler pulley for $24 and Tensioner for $54. Not in stock of course they have to order it won't be in until Tuesday
