set timing with new early block and late model parts

Hey gang, I need your help, I dropped in a 1989 5.0 stang engine in my 66 f100. All my parts are off of a 69-70 302, I have no timing pointer and a high rise intake that touches the dist so that I can only advance or retard about an inch, I got it to fire up but she is runnin hot, How can I time this bad boy. everything is brand new and I really want to use the intake. Thanks Blue Oval Gear Heads......

There are offset kits that might work. Here's one example.

Ideally, you need to know where you're at, which means that you need a pointer. Alternatively, you can adjust it until it pings and then back it off until it stops.

Shouldn't an '89 engine have a pointer??

Find TDC on number one, fab up a pointer and go from there. If you don't know where you are, you can't get to where you want to go.

Agree with other member's comments, establish TDC. Probly more accurate would be to remove the valve cover and check valve position while turning the engine. If I am looking for a general referrence, I remove #1 plug, place finger in the hole, then turn the engine over until compression just forces finger out of the opening, then check position of the timing mark, and rotor.

Suggest bite the bullet and purchase a pointer. The later model 5.0 used a different style pointer that many auto parts stores carry, asking between $35 TO $45, should be able to fab, or salvage for a lot cheaper.

Not familiar with the later model 5.0 dizzy setup, or how it sets in relation to the intake manifold? Do you have electronic ign, or points, brain storming with vary little to work with and wondering if a distributor cap adapter would work? Further, would it be possible to pull the dizzy and rotate the gear a couple of teeth to reach the desired timing, don't beleive it would require repositioning the plug wires on the cap? Anyhow, food for thought????
