I recently overhauled my 1998 4.6 Triton anmd all seemed well until recently I noticed that the exhause seems "steamy" on startup and runs rough but smooths out and exhaust clears up as soon as the temp goes to normal range. I did the heads by the book with new bolts and all so I'm really hoping not to have to take the top end off. Any sensors or such that would get me an out?
P.S.The overhaul has 850 miles on it and I changed the oil out at 650. Has Moly rings in it now. The oil is not "muddy" and I dont see compression in the coolant but I'll keep checking.

could be just water in the muffler burning off? some mufflers have a tiny 1/16" - 1/8" hole near the roll crimp to allow water out.
I'll check it out. Thanks!!
Seems like an aweful lot of water since it "steams" for about a quarter mile or so, but ....we'll see. Still doesn't explain the miss at cold start.
If you are seeing temps in the forty's in the morning? In colder climates it is usually for cars to put out steam. U will know in a few 1000 miles if you have a problem. It may be the intake manifold leaking also. A look with a scope is advised if coolant bottle needs filled soon. Some are willing to try a head gasket sealer additive with the coolant.
small gasket leak will drip a spoon full of coolant into one cylinder when shut down, overnight. On morning startup the truck will missfire for 30 seconds untill that is burnt off, then act normal all day. See if you loose a 12 oz of antifreeze over a months time.
Thanks guys, Good information.
BTW, I put some Boost Brothers shorty headers on it and they didn't quite line up right, long story short- even tightened up as much as I could, there is still a bit of an exhaust leak at the pipe until warmup kinda seals it up-that's why i was maybe thinking the O2 sensor was giving me a bit of craziness.
Yeah, even though I'm in San Diego, it can get a bitt cool at night in the inland valleys..
