Caravan Power Windows

Anyone have any experience installing caravan power window units in a 53?

I've heard references made to it but not much more than that.

FWIW and off topic here but I met a 56 F100 guy with the direct bolt in power windows this weekend at PF. He said they both lasted just a bit longer than the warranty. No further details.

I put the caravan power windows in my 50. They work real good, the main differences between the 50 doors and the 53 doors are yours are thicker, which to be honest, would have made the install much easier.

Robert,

Did you use the Caravan regulators and all or just the power motor units?

I was hoping to be able to use just the glass and the tracks for the 53 and all the rest of the parts from the Caravan.

My 53 regulators are sloppy. I have some ford power window motors adapted to my old regulators, and they go up fine but they don't go down smoothly. It's like the motors go down too fast and the springs in the regulators can not keep up so the windows kinda hop on the way down.

Oh ya and also which year was the donor Caravan?

i used the whole shebang from an 91 caravan, I went with 1 piece glass, and made my own template, and incorperated the way the caravan attaches to the glass, and used the bolts, and bushings from the caravan. the units i used came from a local
u-pull-it, and set me back $12.50 ea.

The hardest part of whole process, was lining up the power window unit to be exactly parrel with the back window track, once it is perfectly aligned, the windows will go up and down smoothly.

Hey CD,

Where the power tracks that you used curved? I just stripped the units from a 94 and they are curved. I was just wondering if this created any problems or if you straightened them. I'm thinking that trying to straighten them would not be good.

i reused the rear track, and made my own front track, I could not locate any 5/8 id channel, so i used some 3/4" id channel and epoxyied a piece of 1/8" stock to one side of the channel. a added a small bracket to the bottom of the track to attach the track to the door.
