And I regularly got 11mpg (driving like a grandpa) on a 15mpg rated F-150. I dont trust "domestics" either when it comes to this stuff. "Your mileage will vary".

It is entirely possible that Americans were lying on behalf of the Korean manufacturer......

6mpg off on the korean soul made by kia for highway miles is unacceptable. people dont buy kia for style, they buy them for mpg and cheap.

American bagded cars typically get better fuel economy than the NON GDI / GTDI Korean cars. I would buy a Hyundai but it would only be for the warranty and for no other reason.

......and their warranty is good, I know some folks that have used it and NO issues when high mileage is there

we all know my opinions on cars of asian descent ............ but despite that a lot of the mpg stuff is : 1 made up as they were in a vacuum going downhill as in real life in weather traffic etc. there's no way yer gonna do that ! 2 the peeps that buy these cars seem to drive even faster and harder than before (as i had a friend tell me this who has done this ) as they figure it gets twice the mpg as my old car so i can drive even faster and save more time getting from point a - b and get the same or better mileage as my old car ............... learn to drive a little more sane you might get closer too the estimated mpg , or maybe even better . i've said it a million times . my 95 bird does 18-22 in town and up too 35.7 on the road depending on how aggressively i'm driving at that time and it's factory rated mpg was no where near these figures . the chip true duals , and other little hot rod tricks have probably had something to do with that , and most of the time i drive it really easily . he!! my 52 customline gets 20-23 in town with a flathead and 3 speed , but only about the same due to the rear diff and no overdrive on the road . so i'd say it is possible for the new ones to possibly reach those figures all depending on variables .

if it isn't from the big three here and not using asian technology like even some of the fords now , or of european manufacturer i don't want nothing to do with them irregardless of where it's built . now when they open their countries freely to us to import our goods into their borders on an equal basis well i might calm down a bit ..............

You think it's bad now, wait until you start running more ethanol in it. The MPG's in all makes will turn to crap then.

Funny how GOVCO is mandating higher MPG's in new cars while forcing increased levels of ethanol in fuel that actually reduces MPG. How does that make sense?

Makes about as much sense as using up the corn to make ethanol to begin with rather than use it for food. The fuel costs more, food costs more, politicians know best for all of us. (and fill their pockets too)

Im going to try, and probably fail, to bring this thread from political to a more technical discussion. First of all, realize that these tests are done in a building, on a dyno. How can especially highway mileage be accurately estimated in still air with no actual wind resistance is a bit of a mystery. From what i gather, that is where the Kia numbers were screwed up. A factor is added for coefficient of drag times frontal area. A "box" or "flying saucer" shaped car may get the same mileage on the dyno, but obviously are going to be different in real life. The EPA "estimate" calculations somehow take that into account. Do you think a Focus or Fiesta with or without SFE package actually get two mpg different on the dyno test with identical powertrains?

This whole EPA mileage estimate thing was never the intent. Its merely a by-product of the emissions test and somehow has become too important itself. The amount of fuel burned is never measured, like you or I would. The tailpipe emissions are analyzed and fuel burn is derived based on weight of carbon in grams per mile.

What about putting the dyno in a wind tunnel? Set the air speed low enough to simulate real-world conditions and go from there...

it would have to be a windtunel with a tredmill like device the entire care drives on. besides your not going to get same mpg on a treadmill surface as a concrete, pavement, blacktop, gravel, dirt, or sand, surfaces.

i think they should do the mpg tests on a sheet of ice with a headwind like we have here in alaska on the highway for 6 months.
