I found a left over 2003 7.3 2wheel drive at a great price and took my wife to take it for a test drive. She liked everything except for the color!!!!! Great???!!! We took it on the highway and got up to speed around 65 and I told her to gas it and try to pass a car. She had the pedel all the way to the floor and pumped it a few times and it would not down shift. I heard of this problem from a guy who just bought the new 2500 dodge, is this what they call turbo lag? I have the V10 in my X and it does not have this problem.
Don't expect the diesel to drive like a gasser. The transmission didn't need to downshift, so it didn't. And yes, there is a turbo lag. Once you get up there in the RPM's it really moves though. Get a chip or tuner and you won't have such a problem at the low end.
I would admit it did speed up. Can you explain turbo lag? You mentioned low end ( high rpm or low rpms), I thought that meant that comes from low end torque from a dead stop?
There is a lot of low end torque, but acceleration is slow. Once the turbo winds up, it helps to accelerate a lot quicker. That's what's so great about the new 6.0, the turbo. It's a variable turbo that works better at low RPM's.
In short, turbo lag is the time between the accelerator being pushed down and when the turbo begins to make enough boost to increase power output. A quick and dirty way to expirence this is; when you are at a red traffic light and the light turns green give it 3/4 to full throttle. You will move 1-2 truck lenghts and then you will feel a sudden rush of power, that is the turbo lag as expirenced from a dead stop (worst case senerio). At highway speeds turbo lag is almost nonexistant due to engine rpm and boost required to drive at wighway speeds.
After owning my truck for awhile , I found the truck really moves when you stomp the pedal anywhere past 65mph. A bigger air intake and a Superchips tuner also helped a great deal....
I second that the BIG open element air filter really helps. I cant wait for my 5" exhaust and scmt to come in(it should be here any day) then she should open right up.
