Front parking brake cable broke... pedal question

Hey folks, the front cable on my '97 snapped so I need to reset the pedal as the internal gear/pawl that is under spring pressure has moved to where I cannot remove the cable. How far does it need to be retracted? I've got it retracted about as far as I can (couple of teeth still showing past the black stamped metal pedal) with the assembly still installed. I think I am going to have to remove the whole control if it needs to retract more... what a PITA that seems to be; I think I have to remove a good bit of the under dash just to get to the upper mounting bolts.

At any rate if anyone knows or can take a pic of theirs I'd appreciate it. As it sits right now I cannot even reach the part of the pawl the cable attaches to. Or if anyone has a Ford repair manual that has an exploded view and instructions would be helpful.

For future reference if someone runs into this:

Took out the whole assembly, probably have to anyway to get the new cable in there. Once it was out I could see there was another hole on the backing plate so the pawl gets rotated until you can insert a pin all the way through.

If anyone has the procedure from the Ford factory service manual for replacing the front cable, I'd sure like to see it.

How did you get the end of the cable off of the Parking brake assembly?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have the same problem. My front parking brake cable broke. I took the foot pedal assembly out but have run into a problem. My mechanism does not have that open groove facing you as in pic 1 of the above thread. And at no point will a drill bit or allen wrench fit through the entire assembly.

When it was working, it would not make a clicking sound when you depressed it. I will take some pics with my new phone and post to show you.

Boy am I dumb! No wonder no one answered me. After I re-read vwkress' post, and realized the pawl(I learned it had a name here!) had to be ROTATED to gain access to the end of the brake line. DUH me.

I had planned this rant about how no one would answer me and you all are mean. I even took pics to post about how mine didn't look like the picture in the post.

Thanks for all of your (non)help and actually make me think for a minute.

Anyone that contributes here does so on a voluntary basis. At no time is anyone obligated to answer any question posed. If you want a place where you can demand answers, then there are places that charge you for that privilege.

I was making fun of myself. I appreciate all of the help this forum, and especially you Alloro have given me throughout the years. You guys have helped me tremendously and for that you have my appreciation. I was just kidding around about how dumb my question was when the answer was right in front of me! Hopefully no offense was taken. Once again it was a joke.

A smiley or two would've helped clarify that.

Again I ask :

Tailgate77478, refering to this step 3 you mentioned?

3. If your truck is equipped with the sound-deader plate below that, remove it using the Phillips screwdriver.

What exactly does this look like , this sound deadening shield?

Do you have a picture, or Ford part number?

Is it factory original in some trim levels?

ATTENTION: Does any other forum member have any information on this?

Thank you very much.
