im new around here. just picked up a 1980 f-150 302 3 on the tree. i tried searching before this post but couldnt find an answer. i got the truck from a buddy, it sat untouched over the winter, it used to be his grandfathers. it runs and what not but when you hit the clutch it sucks itself down about half way and then pushes like it should. when i let off the clutch i have to pull it back up about half way cause it wont return all the way.
it seems as though maybe the throwout bearing is not returning all the way on the spindle or clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel. it shifts into every gear but the gear doesnt hold and it doesnt move when the clutch is out, so im sure that one of the two are stuck down. any ideas on loosening it up or getting it free with out having to pull the tranny back. has anyone had this issue? any help is appreciated.
If the truck doesn't move, you have serious problems and probably need a new clutch. Why else would a good useful truck just be sitting unused? If it was a easy fix, they would have already done it themselves. But that 3 speed isn't too heavy, so it won't be too bad of a job.
its been sittin since my buddies grandfather passed away. he used it as a yard truck the last couple years before he passed. it only has 98000 miles, he bought it new in 1980 and took great care of it. i pulled the boot on the fork back from the tranny and had a buddy hit the clutch. the fork pushes in all the way and pushes the throw out bearing but like i said when it releases the throw out bearing stops about half way. thats why i need to pull the clutch pedal up the rest of the way. i may just suck it up and pull the tranny back. just cause that first few inches when pushing the clutch it its not hitting anything. if i have to get a clutch i will i just figured sitting over the winter and moisture creating some surface rust that the clutch plate could have swelled or the throw out bearing is getting stuck on the spline.
ive replace clutches in rear wheel drives its nothing i cant handle. this is just my first classic that has all manual linkage. the diff clutch set up i am not familiar with so idk if theres something internally that could be just holding the bearing from returning or sorts like that.
Sounds as if things got a little rusty and sticky when sitting. Probably the best bet would be to pull the trans and check everything out. Maybe even replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, and pilot bearing while in there. Peace of mind for a couple hours work and a few bucks. Coat the shaft with grease that the throw-out bearing rides on.
thats a good point made. its a lil rough with money as im not working. thats why i need to do work on the truck so i can get back working. clutch kits arent too much and ill prolly just drop the tranny. i was just curious if anyone had issues like this that could be solved easier. thanks.
If you've got the 10" clutch in it you could upgrade to the 11" at the same time. When i replaced my clutch the first time I did. It wasn't any more money than i would have paid for the 10" stuff anyway. The bolt holes are already in the flywheel.
