The wife just drove home our F350 dually and the truck was driving just fine with no check engine light or anything else..It was running strong like always.. The next morning she went out to go to work and the motor cranks over but will not start.. Every once in a while it will fire on a cylinder or two..
My first question is any ideas.. The oil level is good and was changed about two months ago.. I am going to get two new fuel filters.. Should I also buy a scanner.. Would it tell me anything when the check engine light was not on.. Or should we just take it to a dealer?
I live in hamilton. If you were closer i would stick my sgII on it for you. I am new to the 6.0 so i dont have allot of troubleshooting tips for you. One thing you can check easy without a scan tool is the ficm. Instructions on how to check it is in the tech folder.
I am new to this vehicle computer stuff so what is the FICM.. By the way this ia a 2004 if I did not already post it..I use to work on cars and trucks but got out just after computers were being installed..
In the tech folder there is a no start page that will guide you through trouble shooting a no start. Go through that and then let us know what you got.

Need to also know if your engine is an "Early build" or "late build".
If built before 09-23-03 "Early build"
If not sure, look on the passenger side valve cover for the ICP sensor: (center bottom in picture) if there, late build. If not, early build. This is info for future issues, including this one.
SGII is great to read live data on sensors most problem can be found with it 160.00
AE with ford bundle is best 360.00
odds are its not ICP sensor from sounds of it
I had to deal with ICP on my own rig this weeek and would crank fast but not even give the slightest indication of want to start
ICP needs to show so much PSI B4 FICM will engauge and fire injectors
I use a SCanGaugeII shows practicaly every sensor value not the best code reader but being able to see all the sensor values almost dont need a DTC the DTC is Just a Bonus if you get one
When I first start cranking after the glow plug indicator goes out it acts like it is going to start and then it goes just back to cranking with occasional fire.. My wife is so pissed she said just turn it into a expensive planter box.. Especially since she had just put $100 in diesel in it about 50 miles ago
