Well... it's time to replace the rear brakes on my '65 F250. I've never done this job on a 3/4 ton '60s truck... what should I watch out for/be wary of?
I did this same job about 6 months ago. Most of the usual things apply. I did get new springs since mine were very brittle. I got new drums and shoes from a local parts house so they are available. Good Luck
It seemed pretty straight forwqard when i did my first one ( 15 years ago or more), I was 16- so there really isnt any surprises about to head your way. Im picking up a new (to me) 65 4x4 this weekend from Oregon and driving it back to Bellingham.
Depending on what style of rearend you have, you may have to pull the axles out to get the drums off. I've had D60's where you had to pull the axles, and others where you don't. Maybe you'll get lucky. Either way it's not that big of a deal to do, make sure you put everything back in the order that it came out.
On my '65 250 I had to pull the axles.
Behind each axle nut and lock washer is a split cone shapped wedge that had to come out also.
This slowed me down , Id never seen anything like it before.
And
couldnt figure out why the axle wouldnt come free.
I dont remember the correct name for them. But I brought them in to a Ford truck dealer, and sure enough they had some new ones. The guy at the counter thought only big rigs still used them.
I got help from FTE and hope this will help you.
peace out , C & R
