Hi Guys
I have a problem with my 1962 Unibody pickup.
The previous owner changed the ignition switch to an aftermarket one.
In the process of doing this, she cut the wiring plug that goes to the ignition switch out of the car.
So I,m putting a stock ign switch back in the car and there is no way of knowing which wire goes where on the back of the switch.
I do nt have the stock plug so I was going to use female spade terminals.
Looking at the back of the switch,I need to know to which terminal do which wires go?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
Most switches are marked as, batt, ***, start, I, find the hot wire, and with the truck in nutural, using a jumper wire attatched to it, touch the others one at a time, when you hit the start wire the engine will turn over, another one will give you spark to the points, mark each one as to what it does, then wire to the switch.
Thanks for the reply.
This switch has no markings so you can,t tell which is the batt post.
So you can,t test it as you said.
I,ll probably have to get a meter and check continuity thru the switch.
I think the center bolt is the batt power post but I,m not sure.
I don,t want to ruin the switch.
I know which wires are which under the dash but I don,t know their position on the back of the switch,
Don't know how much different a '62 would be from a '66, but I can help with one of those. One thing I know, Ford usually didn't change wire colors so I would think they will be the same. Looking at the ignition switch from the back, the wire that goes to the center post is black/green and goes to the fuse box. It is switched for accessories. The yellow wire which splices to black/yellow goes between the bottom switch terminal and the amp meter or idiot light, then ultimately to the starter solenoid, possibly via a junction block under the dash or mounted to the right side inner fender panel. The red/green wire goes to the top left switch terminal and eventually connects to the ignition coil after first connecting to the pink resistor wire. My switch picture shows a top right terminal, but doesn't tell me if a wire hooks to it. Hope this helps!
Well I know this is an older thread but I finally got this figured out myself with my buds over on the HAMB. I put an aftermarket harness in my 62 unibody, got rid of the generic switch and am installing a stock one I got from Dennis Carpenters.
Well I had a picture posted but it seems to have disappeared
I have the same problem, however, the wiring has been changed and the colors do not totally match up. I found a supplier (LMC) has the socket with wires for splicing that installs into the switch. If you want to go that way
Just realized this is a year old problem, I wish I had the ability to find this on the forum and super sabres response. It would have saved me a lot of work.
