Put a 428 crank in it with 390/410/428 rods and 410 pistons. If you've got enough cash, use a 4.375" stroker crankshaft.

i want to put a stroker crank in, match it with a cam not sure which direction to go on a cam, and long tube headers. was told that i can put 428 cj heads on but dont know if its true or not. my biggest question is where to start with timing. i know 360's like to ping.

Really? What do you have to put the timing at to make it ping? 20*?
Correct me if I am wrong, but ALL stock 360's are smog motors that are pretty low compression. I *think* they had retarded cams too.
From my experience, all of the above make it almost impossible to make a motor ping with the timing set below 16*. I would set the timing at ~ 12*

i was also told by ford guys to locate a 77-79 half ton for its front and rear axles. i was told to do this because of more durable diff and front disc brakes. can you confirm this?

In one word..... yes! Don't forget to get the proportioning valve for the front disc brakes when you swap axles. You will need it for the disc brakes to work properly.
