1969 F100 Engine Swap

Ok let me star off by saying i really dont know much about cars/trucks. I have an automatic 1969 ford f100 with a 360 engine and a C6 Transmission. I recently got a 390 engine off a 3 speed 1968 f100. my question is, to get it running would i need to swap out the transmission aswell? Or can i just keep the transmission but replace the bellhousing and flywheel? Or for that case what will need to be done to get the truck up and running?

Thanks in advance.

The 360 & 390 are the same engine externally. The trans will bolt right up. You will also need to take the flywheel from the 360 and use it on the 390. Are you certain you bought a 390? The only difference is the stroke. You check this by pulling a plug and putting something long enough to reach the piston when all the way at the bottom. Mark the stick Then turn the engine by hand until that same piston is at top. Mark the stick. Now take it out and measure between the marks. Now compare that with published specs.

Yes, im pretty sure that its a 390 because the engine has been well documented and the guy i bought it from gave me the documents. I will try what you suggested just to make sure. So are you're saying that engine(which came off a manual truck) will bolt right on to the auto transmission?

They are the same engine externally. You will have to remove the pilot bearing from the crankshaft of the engine with the manual trans.

The 390 will bolt up to the C6 and do remove the pilot bearing from the back side of the 390 crankshaft as elgemcdlf suggested, otherwise you will destroy the C6's front pump. In fact, the 390 will fit where the 360 now sits with no modification.

A 1/2 inch wooden dowel about 2 foot long works well to measure the stroke. Pull a spark plug on the 390 and put the dowel in the hole on the top of the piston, turn the crank pulley nut with a socket and wratchet until that piston bottoms out...mark the dowel at the top of the plug hole. Do the same with your 360, using the same dowel and compare the marks...the 360 mark on the dowel should be under the 390 mark if it is really a 390 cause the 390 has a slightly longer piston stroke. You will need to use the carb off the 360 after you drop the 390 in its place...the 390 is a direct swap to the C6 with the flywheel swapped and pilot bearing removed, but the carb on the 390 may not have the linkage for the kick-down rod that is on the C6 transmission...compare the linkages to be sure.

Alright, thanks you guys. Will definitely try what yall recommended. So after I have swaped out the flywheel and and removed the pilot bearing is the engine ready to be installed?

Forgot to tell you to pay careful attention to which way the flywheel comes off the 360. It may go on backwards and cause problems but maybe not. If the teeth are ground down more than halfway, it would be best to install a new one now, instead of later.
