68' Ranger - which engine to install?

I imported a 68 F100 Ranger from Georgia .... great body and paint (shortbed). My son and I want to rebuild her drivetrain. She has a 360 in her now and a three speed with no overdrive. I'm not concerned about gas mileage (only runs in summer on the weekends) but I want reasonable efficiency and the most original engine/transmission combo possible, we aren't modifying it or chroming it up - just want it to look like it did when it came home from the dealership. If it was up to any of you experts, what would you do? I can get a rebuilt 302 from a great shop for about $1400 ..... Thanks, Greg

Welcome to FTE.

What engine did it have in it originally?

Post the door jam info and there are folks here who can decode it for you.

If it's a shortbed, a 302/T10 isn't bad but isn't a very strong tranny. Now, it's another story if ya can find a Toploader.

Other options include a 302/C4 or a 300/C4....

Ranger a 302/AOD could be a decent choice.

If you want power stick with the FE maybe rebuild it back as a 390. No modern ODs will fit without an adapter.

3-speed manual or auto? Either way, I'd go with the 302 if you have to have a V-8...300 straight six if not...they are more fuel efficient and last forever...decent speed with the right rear end and they'll pull a barn down when you need to.
