My buddy just got a 84' Ranger 4x4 and we are planning on stripping it down to frame and rebuilding up, just for the heck of it. We want to put a bigger motor in. I will have a 360 available here shortly, but he was thinkin a 302. Any comments on this? Im just curious what other crazy stuff anyone may have done, this is a pure beater 4x4 truck that we just want to mess-around w/ when building. Thanks.
We decided on a 302 cause we need his truck put back together before we tear into mine. Im guessing this has been done, any pointers from anyone. We are doing this all in garage. One of my biggest worry's is what to do with the tranny. Will we need to all the Electronics hooked up to the 302 or would it be better to get a new Tranny?
Now for tranny if you are talkin about using the old tranny with the 302. I think not. But seeing how you have a 84 Ranger 4x4 that probabuly came with the 2.8L in it. If you have an auto tranny and it is a C4 then you can use the old tranny. It will bolt up to the 302. Now if you have the I4 in the truck then you won't be able to use the tranny.
This swap has been done time and time over. If you are looking for pointers or help contact these people over on www.rrorc.com the following: Les Mair, Bobbywalters, Matt Mair.
I wouldn't bother with the original tranny. Yes, it can be made to bolt up to the 302, but if it's a manual it's just not a very strong tranny and won't hold up too well. This is a conversion that has been done time and again, I'm doing it now (although my truck is 2wd) and there are many websites with a ton of info, including books available. I decided to fabricate everything myself instead of buying the one of the many kits on the market. If you do a search on this site on "Ranger V8 Swap" you should turn up a lot of info and links. One company, called MRE has swapped a 460 into a Ranger, but had to fabricate EVERYthing, of course. Not an easy swap. Anyway, have fun. I'm hoping to have mine done by this summer. I'm still driving it with the 2.9 for now, doing all the R&D and fabrication on one of my parts trucks, plan to take about a week to do the actual swap, if nothing goes wrong. Got pics of everything so far, just haven't posted 'em yet. Good luck, -TD
