Old used trucks are like a box-o-chocolates. At least the 4.9 will never die and you can hold that over his head for a looong time!

Sounds like he has a habit of buying trucks that are on their last leg or have been put through the ringer, then wonders why they blow up.

I once left my headlights on for 7 hours and asked my friend, a GM driver, for a jump. Big mistake. For weeks he told everyone about it, and how it happened because it was a Ford.

That's a pretty good story though, RangerGirl. I don't think brakes are a problem if the truck doesn't GO in the first place.

$600 engine vs. $40 brake cylinder....I might have to mull this one over for a while...........

tell him to quit riding the brakes. I know it moves a lot faster then 3 broke chevies, so I think he is scared of the speed.

I was a "chevy guy" for the first 11 years I had a license. I owned a 75 chevy step side short bed, and it was a beast of a truck. It was sooooo dependable and I rarely needed to do anything other than basic maintenance. IIRC, I had to replace the ignition coil and the water pump, and the front and rear u-joints, and that was all until the rebuild. The original carb lasted until about 390k. I figure it had about 420k when I rebuilt the motor. I don't know for sure as I never had an operational speedo/odometer when I owned it, but I knew a lot about the trucks history.

I went straight from that truck to my 91 F150. Seriously, the only complaint I have with the 351 design [and I'm pretty sure this isn't exclusive to the 351] is the distributor being on the front end. It's nice for practical reasons, like checking timing, changing the cap/wires, etc. There's lots of advantages to it. But, the drawback for me, and this is a big one as far as I'm concerned, was that when I needed to change the oil pan gasket, I had to drop the oil pump to get the pan completely out. If the distributor/oil pump were on the rear end of the motor, that wouldn't be necessary.

Other than that, I've no complaints with my F150, and so far it's proven itself to be as reliable a truck as my old chevy was.

For me one of the biggest reasons I had avoided GM trucks was the lack of parts availability compared to Ford, and that the newer ones do not have a very well thought out design for a lot of critical engine components. GM engines always seem to fail because of stupid little problems like coolant leaks and such.

Nowadays I could never stomach buying a GM after the 2008 bailout. It has nothing at all to do with the trucks themselves.

We wife has a 07 loaded impala, black on black and over all a nice ride. It has 106,400 miles on the clock and to date has had fixed under warranty;
1. Head gaskets at about 74,000
2. Leaking trans line around 80,000
3. Rebuilt the transmission at 98,600 miles, took them 3 trys to get is right.

I told her we will be replacing the government motors car with a ford a lincoln or a mercury next despite her love for the new malibu.......ick

I am thinking a fusion or mkz

I cant speak for the newer chevy's and I wouldnt want to, but in my teenaged years I had quite a few different chevy, fords, and dodges. They al have their good and bad points.

The 350 is a tough engine, I used and abused the hell outta my old one and it took alot of crap before it finally blew!

Havent blown a 302 yet though

I see tons of old chevys around here, but almost ALL of them are rusting out. WTF did chevy use for metal? Old hotwheel cars? No, cause those last longer.

I always make the joke to chevy owners, when they poke at me for breakin a ford.
They say should have gotten a chevy. I say something like, sure the motor runs for 400k miles, but you gotta change the body every 100k miles.

Also, I will never buy a chevy pickup newer the '79, all that I have dealt with have had tons of wiring issues.

i drive a chevy. my 93 ford had 305k miles on a 300/M5. all original. 97 had 265k. all original. this chevy has 95k miles. in the time ive owned it, 4 months, ive had to replace:

front accessory plate
water pump
alternator
fan belt
fan clutch x2
head gasket
all vacuum lines
fuel pump
exhaust repaired twice before replacing whole system
both 02 sensors
trans slave

it still needs:

dead short causing ECM fuse to blow
needs a clutch and a transmission
needs all new steering components.

i miss my fords.

EDIT: forgot to add, this truck is a 96. beautiful condition. dealer serviced. (up until me)
