Hello, I have a 98' expedition in need of new lower ball joints. I have been researching the job in depth the last few weeks and believe i have a good feel for it. First off, will it make sense to replace any other parts while I have everything disassembled? Also does anybody have any words of wisdom before i turn my truck into a 2 ton paper weight?
Thanks for any help, the following link is the install video i will follow. PART 2 How To Install Replace Lower Ball Joint 97-03 Ford F-150 Expedition 1AAuto.com - YouTube
Good link! Do you have a ball joint press? Check condition of control arm bushings and tie rod ends. If bushings are worn, control arms are available with ball joints installed. If you mess with the bushings or tie rod ends an alignment will be needed. If your lower ball joints are really worn, an alignment might be a good idea after the job is finished.
If you've watched both videos and have the tools available, it is a straight forward job.
If you just replace the ball joints, go with higher-end ones like Moog, or you'll be replacing them again sooner than you think. Probably want to do the top ones too, and get it all done at once.
So how everything go? Glad I found this thread, I am changing my stabalizer links, since I have all that good stuff out the way and being replaced, the first vid is good. I thought the links had a load on them and wasn't sure where to loosen. This was help full.
