2008 f150 5.4 4wd 22,000 mi driving normal get grating noise sounds like xfer case trying to engage, turn 4wd *** to 4wd hi then off noise goes away. Sometimes it happens several times in one day then nothing for months. Apreciate any ideas. Thanks Walt
Had the same problem with my 04 f150 like he said sounds like a vaccume problem. That what mine ended up being, found it after gave up on the dealer as it was under warrenty. They replaced killed hubs 7 times and never fixed it, turned out had a torn vaccume line at the hub, would also look at solenoid as they are problematic also. When i did mine the dealership gave me the parts as was on warrenty yet and i replaced both hubs, vac lines and solenoid never had another front end problem but wont talk about trans.
If its like mine its actually a hub partly engaging. You either have a vacuum leak or a moisture issue. At least that what my problem was. I made a hood to cover my solenoid and after a month or so it apparently dried up and havent had any more issues. This was three years ago and everything works fine currently.
Had a similar problem like this. It was trying to engage and made a racket like those old things you put on bicycle rims way back in the day that hit the spokes and made the crazy sound lol...best way i can describe it. It was a vacum problem but not a line. Im not sure of the correct name of it but i think its called the hub accuator on the inside of the wheel. Its round and has two vacum line going to it. I can take a picture of it tomorrow and send it to you if you want. It took the shop about 2 weeks to identify the problem! Might be your problem, might not be but its worth checking into i think.
Replaced IWE solenoid today, also checked vacuum 21 at idle coming off engine before check valve. Drove truck and no noises hopefully its good, thanks xjcamaro89 for info and help. Walt
