Gutting the cat on a 5.0
I have a 1992 F250 5.0 E4OD 2 wheel drive. I was thinking about gutting or removing the FRONT cat because it's showing some obvious signs that it may be clogging. I already removed the rear cat a long time ago. The front cat is the dual inlet single outlet style. I smell that rotten egg smell and the sound seems different along with performance. It really seems to choke a little bit when I get on the pedal. (And before anyone asks, no codes are present, complete tune up, oil change, many new sensors, and no vacuum leaks)
Anyhoo, I'm very cheap and won't have this truck much longer so I don't want anything fancy. I was thinking about gutting the front cat while it's still on the truck by cutting the 3 inch pipe right behind it and sticking a piece of pipe in there and knocking it out. Would this work ok considering it's the dual inlet style? Or am I better off cutting the whole thing out? I have 2 brand new 2 inch glasspacks I'd love to put on it but I don't know how well they'd fit. I'm worried the studs may break if I pull the Y pipe to do this. (The passenger side has bolts on the flange because it was replaced. Driver is factory studs)
Any suggestions? And I don't have emission laws and don't care that I "Need" one on there because it was factory. I'm also not doing this for gains of any kind. I'm afraid it's clogging up and I don't want it to destroy my engine!
