Tranny engages with a thud, 0 to 3 mph every time.

Tranny engages with a thud, 0 to 3 mph every time. (1999 4R100) Feels like a real bad, loose, U-Joint but it's not.

Been this way for a lot of miles. I took it to a reliable driveline shop sometime back, because I couldn't see anything wrong with the drive line. This guy couldn't either! He said those words that no one wants to hear… It's in the Tranny! And he said he wouldn't do anything until it breaks, if it was his.
That was at 16K when I bought it with the thump, (thinking U-Joint) now I'm about to 100K and going to do my own tranny oil/filter change.

The weird thing is one day it hard shifted. I mean neck snapping, something's gonna break hard shifting! I couldn't even limp it home at low rpm's. It would still hard shift.

So I pulled over and shut it off (remembering something about this somewhere before) found absolutely nothing. Started it back up, pulled out slowly and OMG it shifted perfectly!!

And remained shifting perfectly without the normal bump at 0-3 mph for a total of about three months!!! Now it's back to the bump every shift. Ever heard of this?

The main reason I'm asking is for any ideas before I drop the pan?

I just did a Durango and there are a couple of adjustments under there for the adjusting the bands but nothing for this kind of problem.

Is there anything for this kind of problem that being under there will fix??

Have you checked for codes with a Ford compatible scan tool? If a transmission code is stored it will set pressures high and make for harsh shifts.

have you ever pulled and greased ur drive shaft slip joint ???

that could also cause a similar issue, but not usually anywere near as bad as your describing.

Tranny engages with a thud, 0 to 3 mph every time.

There weren't any codes set back when it hard shifted a few months ago.

I used a Cen-Tech reader from Harbor Fart; don't know if they are a good enough reader, but no codes then. However I got my hands on the same reader today and found in the pending codes P0500 speed sensor A. Which come to think of it, I did notice a slight shift timing issue the other day between 1 and 2nd?

Could the speed sensor also cause my low range engagement thud?

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Really? That could cause the engage thud I'm feeling?

The answer to your question is no, but I will look at it while I'm under there and report back if it needs it and solves it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may have never thought of that on my own!

Can't tell if it is 4WD or not - I'm in the middle of a noise that turned out to be a loose output flange on the transfer case. Mild vibration at 45 MPH, too.

This 4R100 trans is a 2WD. Thanks for the thought though!

basicly the driveline can bind up a bit when first given gas if the splines are dry..

then when the forces overcome teh friction, the truck can experience a thud.. but like i said its usually a slight thud guys complain about not a really hard one..

but given a worn set of splines and a extremely dry slip joint anything is possible..

lukily its a easy repair and inspection..pull the shaft out slip it apart and grease 'er up..

It WORKED!!! No more thud-clunk-bump. It's in my top 10 cheapest fixes, a gob of grease!
If you have this problem pull down your slip yoke and no matter how greased it looks… grease it anyway and don't just live with it like I did!

You da man Fordfanatic4life! Like I said I might have never thought of this on my own. My only question is where were you 80,000 miles ago???

Check this for pic's. http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/slipjoint.htm

I pre-sprayed those 8mm bolts with penetrating oil before heading off to the parts store but still had a hard time loosening them up. They wanted to strip, and I was even using a socket.
What worked for me was an 8mm box end wrench, held tight by hand with pressure to loosen while tapping with a small hammer. That broke them loose without stripping the heads.
I did not drop the drive shaft at the differential or pumpkin as shown, I dropped mine at the center cv joint. Just the difference between model years I'm sure.
I loosened the larger clamp (mine was the front clamp, the link is showing the rear clamp) with a screwdriver but not too much, just enough to get the boot to slip out of the groove in the yoke shaft.

Then, when I was done, I re-crimped the same clamp with a pair of horizontal dykes that bit like your teeth would. The clamp cinched right back up and the boot feels secure.
Happy Greasing! And thanks to all of you for your help.

Hi everyone, new deisel owner as well. Just purchased a 2010 superduty and have the same clunk / thud. The vehicle only has 14k miles, could this be the same issue even with a 2 year old truck? Ford looked at the leafsprings, suspension and rear diff and they said there were no issues. The shop manager admitted he felt the same thud but called it "normal powertrain wrap-up." Quite annoying for a $40k truck.

My buddy has a 2001 V10, CC, dually, Long bed, 4x4. He is complaining about a similar problem.

He said that when he changed the speed sensor from the differential the problem went away a couple of weeks. O told him about the slip joint but he says that his truck doesn't have it.

Does any one know if a long bed crew cab has the slip joint?

The drive shaft has a slip joint. Otherwise when the suspension articulated the drive shaft wouldn't move and bad things would happen. Could be he means he doesn't have a carrier bearing but I believe all long bed truck have a carrier bearing as well.
