Umm, not real sure. That has been a concern of mine from day one of ownership. Not so much me making the mistake as someone else. Whether mistakenly or on purpose. Wish there was a locking fuel cap for this very reason. If, and I say if, you accidently poured some def in your fuel tank, I think I would drain the tank, and if you ran the engine with some def in the tank, I would change the fuel filters also.

Disclaimer: This would be the minimum something that you should probably do. I am sure someone has a different opinion. I hope I never have to find out the real procedure.

I hope you are right! i'll find out tomorrow when i get it to Ford. It was put in (by mistake) and then unknowingly driven 4 km down the road, when we got to my sisters, turned it off, then went to move it, and she wouldnt start, not thinking, thought somethin went wrong with starter, so tried again, (ended up burnin out starter!!) and she wouldnt turn over, thats when it hit my dad, that he poured it in the wrong tank. He too has been so very careful with it. They definitly need to do something about the two caps there. Locking caps or some how a different location!!! I just hope it didnt do motor damage. praying

I would think the water separator would have tried to do its job. DEF being mostly water should have been spun out of the diesel fuel (oil). First thing I'd do is drain the separator and see what's there. Perhaps cycling the fuel as per the owner's manual would pump any water in the lines back into the tank and ready to be caught by the separator.

I hope nothing bad has happened to the engine. I would think with only 4 KM on it that you should be able to drain the tank, flush the fuel system, replace the filters, and be OK. Only the mechanic who looks at it will be able to properly asses it.

I don't think Ford should spend any money trying to reengineer the placement of the two tanks or fills. They did a good job with the two different colors and different diameter intakes. I mean no disrespect, but people have to take responsibility for their actions and the consequences of those actions.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like you have a $19,000 accident. For what it's worth, I just had a guy with his 2011 that darkened my doorstep with fuel CETANE BOOSTER put in his DEF tank that ended up being a $5000 lesson learned. The other way around though, since you mention is has been driven until it stopped running, I can tell you there is no other way around it. You are going to need to have all injectors as well as everything in the high pressure fuel system replaced to get it running properly again.

The unknown, at least by me, is what chemical reaction takes place when def is mixed with diesel. I pray you come home with good news from the dealer.

Going to need fuel tank drained, probably need a new hpfp, maybe injectors, fuel filters. Talk with your insurance company and see if they will help with this.

Hey guys,

Just moved this into it's own thread. Much better to have a thread dedicated to a certain problem than clutter up an existing one.

Linda Anne, has the truck been brought to a dealer? They would be the only ones that could do a proper diagnosis. Unfortunately I suspect M-chan68 is correct.

Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out.

Like Epic, I would assume the fuel filter would seperate out the water from the diesel. But it was never designed to seperate 5 gallons of water.

From a curiosity standpoint. Just how much DEF did he pour into his Diesel fuel tank? a 2.5 gallon jug? thats a lot of water in your system.

I'm sure you are looking at draining the tank and fuel lines, replacing fuel filters as a minimum. Good luck.

Did the Water in fuel light come on, or what ever the equivalant is on these trucks? Or the one to check your fuel water seperator/drain water light? Any lights at all? I really would have expected that a light would have been lit well before any (lasting) damage would have happened. While the filters are not designed to do that volume at once, I would have thought it would have filtered to capacity then the issue would have happend.... The DEF is mostly water.

You bring up a good point. Does anyone know if these truck's have a shutdown mechanism if it detects water? It does if you run out of DEF. You would think that protecting your investment would be a high priority.
