ok so I have looked around the site a little bit, maybe I was looking in the wrong place but here is my problem. I have a 64 f100 3 on the tree I was told the transmission should be replaced and I may as well throw in an automatic. My question is what benefit will the automatic give me I am hoping to make this a daily driver for school, i will be doing about 20-30 miles a day. I was driving her around the city and the manual was fun. the commute i will be doing will be on rural roads mostly any advice would be greatly appreciated also what kind of auto tranny options do i have c4, aod i need a little guidance.

What's wrong with the manaul tranny? Just a bad clutch or what? I would compare the conversion cost verse transmission repair.
If your convert; I would think the selection of Trans to a 292 is limited verse say a FE motor swap etc. Also starter will have to be switch as well. These are just the basic of conversion.
I would check into the 3 spd transmission reason for being bad!
Thanks for the input I will have to check back with you guys as to the reasoning behind the tranny swap. I think it has a lot to do with a bad clutch and also based on the opinion that an automatic is just easier to drive. I know that the clutch is not fully releasing from the flywheel but from what I have read on other posts that could be because there is no clutch release spring?
Why not just fix what you got then go through the hassle of swapping in an automatic? Keep the character of the old truck with the 292 and 3 on the tree.
I personnally like automatics. I would find a 302 with an AOD transmission from a mid 80's Crown Victoria or pickup and swap out. You will get much better gas mileage and the truck will be a lot easier to drive. I realize the nostalgia aspect of keeping the truck original but driveablitiy is very important for me. I am going to try finding a FE C6 when I rebuild my '66 F100.
Good luck, unfortunately the 292 only has one transmission (Cruise-o-matic) available where the 302 you can use C4, C6, T5 manual, AOD transmissions. Not to mention aftermarket parts are reasonably priced where 292 parts seem high priced.
Im definately a manual fan. I have the 3 on the tree in my 66 ford with the original 352. I just like the control you have in a manual transmission. I am going to do a resto but Im not going to do an engine swap. It just hit 63000 and runs great
I got the tree on the three with the overdrive,,,,but the ****ch by the acelerator that suposed kick in the over drive at the release of the Gas pedal,,seems to be like a one inch away from touching the gas pedal,,,so it is not really working,, I got to do some tricky stuff like adding a spacer or something.
The 300 in line six runs fine, sore of low on the oil pressure gauge,,but I'll replace the oil sensor some time later,,hopefully the pressure comes up, if not,,it means that I need a new oil pump or new mains..etc.etc..
I was riding very happy on teh hig way, and the truck just die on me,,electrically, so I pulled over, and than,,there was this big clow of smoke!!!
I wen and disconected the battery quiick,,and I saw fire on some of the cables by the fire wall!!
so, I trowed water and the fire stoped, ha,ha,ha, I never have a car turn on fire on me before, hela dum.
there is a Juncktion conection right by the battery bolted down to the inner fender, the screws got rusted and the whole conector came off making the whole connector tocuh the inner metla fender,,that caused the short.
I straped the loose juncktion to my heather hose for now away from any grounding surface.
the truck runs rela nice, and loud as hell, previus owner installed a very SHort small Flow master that keeps my neighbors awake.
I can understand someone wanting to go to an automatic, since I have been actually thinking about such a swap for my '66 F100 on and off for the past year or so.
Reason? When I did the Ford box power steering swap, I lost the column shift, and a new Hurst floor shifter and installation kit cost is around $300. I think I could come close to buying all the parts needed for a C6 conversion for that kind of cash, so you get to weighing the feasibility of making the trade.
When I add the fact that my better half would rather have an auto, since she is too short to reach the clutch pedal with the seat all the way back AND there is no room with the stock steering wheel to move the seat up, it is really a reasonable solution to consider even if you like the manual tranny just fine.
Anyway, I noticed a lot of concern about "what's wrong with the manual tranny", but sometimes it is other considerations that cause the idea of a swap. Just my $0.02.
Trafic in S.F. Ca. going throug the bridge back and fourt at peak hrs. will make anyone switch to an automatic, and you right, that clutch pedal,,travel like hell!! just by driving every day I get my left leg work out just right,,ha,ha,ha.
is nice to have control of the truck with a stick shift, but...easy driving is the whole thing, at least for me.
so, some time later I'm going to replace engine and Trans, for a 302 from a 70-72 truck, and hopefully I find a AOD trans.
