I took a 76 F150 tank; and turned it 90 degrees between the rails on my 74 Highboy frame; use a section of bent exhuast pipe to turn the fuel fill lines to come out the oem gas cap location on the bed. I also used the straps from the same donor to secure the tank.
Hope this gives ya a ideal.

I used a tank from an 80s ranger. I wrote an article on how I did it if you search for it.

Topher- reading your location reminded me that when I lived in MN we referred to the entire state of WI as "Minnesota's armpit." Like, when we wanted beer on Sundays we'd say, "I'm gonna to run to the 'pit for some frosties."

yeah, but the 'pit' had the frosties and you didn't, eh?

The '78 tank should fit just fine. A lot of years will fit actually. I am doing an efi conversion on my '76 and using a tank from a '92 and it dropped right in between the rear frame.
