Hey everyone, I'm new to this site but have heard only good about it. I just filled up my coolant 3 weeks ago, and I'm noticing it slowly going down. After i park i don't see any on the ground or anything but i have a feeling its going somewhere? Does anyone have any ideas on where it could be going? Are their common places for it to disappear to?
Im not loosing large quantities of it. It used to go through those little passages on the holding tank (the squares) along the bottoms but now I can only see it on the side. Its still between the min and max line but its concerning me.
Look at the top and bottom all of the hoses for a slight leak, a leak/ pressure tester works good for checking. The next step would be to check the weep hole on the under side of the water pump. May have to check on a hot engine when the pressure is up.
Good luck, Nick
happens to a lot of us....no real answer to it..it just happens.no matter how much you put in it seems to always end about 2 inches low..leave it be...it shouldnt ever drop any lower then that....if it does..please report back so we can help you find the problem...
Thanks Ron, Ill mark it with a sharpie and check it over and over, over a period of time and make sure it is staying put finally. Like you mentioned it went down around 2".
Sorry to sound so dumb what do you mean when i run my "Climate control?"
That just means your AC, Vent, Defrost, Etc. If theirs any coolant leaking in your engine compartment the fan will pick up the smell, as well as a leak in the heater core.
I haven't smelt any coolant inside the cab for sure. I don't think i can smell it outside either. I never smelt for it but you know its one of those smells you pick up on instantly and say "oh crap!"
I guess if it holds that lower level it'll be alright. But I'd keep an eye on it for sure. You don't have any cracks in the reservoir, do you. That's common on these? I've lost 3 engines in my lifetime to overheating, and I'm paranoid about it.
i can fill my truck up to the normal cold range and run it and the level drops to about 1 or 2 inches below that and stays there. and i have no leaks or antifreeze smell so idk were its going

I had the same thing, except I did detect a slight leak at the temp sensor. I replaced the waterpump, thermostat, housing, upper and lower hoses and temp sensor. Now my level stays steady. Maybe some engines are running hotter and losing some to the overflow, just a thought.
My '01 Excursion does something similar. No matter how full I fill it, the level always settles to just at or slightly below the low mark. It's done it for years, but is really noticable now that have a new coolant bottle. No trace of the "missing" coolant...
Well, I checked mine this AM and it's sitting at the minimum cold level. Maybe that's where it's just supposed to be, by design. I have to drain some out soon to put a new bottom hose on my new reservoir, and I'll fill it to the max and see what happens.
