Distributer wont go in

I have a 88 bronco II, and i am rebuilding the engine. I had the distributer removed, and accidently rotated the crankshaft. After finding tdc(top dead center), the distributer wont go in with the rotor facing the #1 terminal. I think it is because the oil pump rod slips into the bottom of the distributer, and because i rotated it, it wont line up. Any thoughts?

in my 86, we couldn't get the disty back in on #1, so we jumped the wires one to the left i think, started right up

Another thing you can do is put the distributor in so it will be lined up for #1. Lightly hold down on the distributor housing and slowly rotate the crankshaft in the correct direction with a large wrench/socket. As it rotates, the cam gear will be turning the distributor shaft and when the oil pump drive lines up with the distributor shaft it will let the distributor drop in the rest of the way and it should be timed correctly. To check it, back up the rotation of the crankshaft to where you started, to see if the rotor is pointing to #1. When you go the reverse rotation watch that the distributor doesn't walk up out of the hole if you don't have the hold down clamp on it.
