With the demise of solid rear axles on the Explorer, which I assume will lead to the eventual dropping of the Explorer Sport/Sport Trac platform, is there much serious talk of a crew cab Ranger? I figure they'd wait until a redesign (when might that be, anyway?), but Chevy did come out with a crew cab in the last days of the S-10...I guess they figure the Sport Trac is their current entry in the crew cab market, huh?
With the Dakota, Tacoma and Frontier crew cabs, and Chevy coming out with the Colorado, it seems to me that Ford is lagging behind in this segment...and I don't see the Sport Trac being 'truck' enough to measure up, although maybe sales figures would say otherwise (I don't know). With the transformation of the Explorer into a true station wagon, I would hope a new Ranger would be based more on the F-150, including the myriad of trim, cab and bed options.
It would also be awesome to see the 4.6 or another small V8 option...wonder why Chevy isn't going to put the 4.8 in the Colorado? Seems like the Dakota would have a stranglehold on that area- a compact/midsize pickup with a V8 option.

Interesting thought. My opinion is that as long as the Sport Trac is in production and sales are decent (relatively speaking), Ford is not going to introduce a crew cab style Ranger in the US market. It comes down to simple economics. I don't think you'll see a true four door Ranger until, like you suggested, a new design is in place. And a phasing out of the Sport Trac platform will probably coincide with new Ranger design. Just my opinion.
One problem is that ford's crew cab (150) has a short bed and I assume Ranger would be the same. I really hate to say this but my son is about to replace his 150 with a Dodge crew cab because he needs the four doors AND a full size bed.
