transmission leak

1993 f150 flareside 156,000 miles
v8 5.0
14 bolt transmission

Ok, tonight after i backed up. i put my truck in drive and i was a little impatient for the gear change and hit the gas a little. It went into gear and after i got out after driving about 150 feet(moving hoses around) there was a big trail of transmission fluid.

I had to drive about 4 miles to get home and it kept dropping into neutral(obviously low on fluid at that point). I have a drain pan under it right now so there's not a big mess.

The leak appears to be coming from above the middle cross member right where the back of the transmission and drive shaft meet.

I cannot exactly see where the leak is coming from but it's coming off that cross member.

What broke?

Angry and frustrated

~Chris

Well after some searching around, it appears to be something with the trans tail housing.

Is it safe to get this part used from a junkyard?

Pick 'N' Pull has it cheap in my area.

Bad new

Replace transmission. It run low on fluid is already damage.

Get another good used or rebuilt transmission.

Now you make me worry about my weak tran in explorer that I didn't wait before shift.

I think I found the problem!

Is there a seal on the real housing? You know, the little boit has REAR stamped on it) that supports the very tail end of the transmission and before the drive shaft?

Isn't there a seal above that support? If so, that's that called?

When I changed the oil pan seal and filter, i saw no metal shards what so ever.

(I would add this to the other post but when I edit posts, it says i don't have the right privileges to modify the post when i submit)

Christopher, I think maybe most of our forum members here are having a hard time figuring out what you are talking about, so they are not replying. I sure am!

Are you talking about the seal at the end of the extension housing, or a transmission mount, or what? You gotta speak our language

It appears to be a mount.

When you say extension housing, what does that look like?

AH I figured it out!

There is a crack on the extension housing. Is it easy to remove? Will I have to take off a bunch of random bushings and and stuff? It's just as simple as take the crossmember off with the support and unbolt the housing from the rest of the transmission, then that shouldn't be a problem.

Anybody know where I can find a take apart video or document to help me with this?

Should be easy to remove. Remove driveshaft by unbolting the rear end of it, but make matchmarks first, so it goes back on the same to the differential.

Of course, block wheels, because truck can roll without driveshaft in, and you may need to put into neutral anyway and rotate driveshaft by hand to get at all bolts. Can use PARK as a holder so shaft doesn't turn when trying to unbolt.

Put a jack with a board on it under the trans pan. Board needs to be big enough to reach two opposite sides of pan, so trans is lifted by the strong vertical walls of trans pan, NOT by a bare puny jack saddle in the middle of the pan! Before jacking, unbolt whatever part of the trans mount you can get to, then jack up trans a bit to get clearance to remove the trans mount.

Then remove crossmember. Unbolt extension housing to main case bolts. Pull housing off. The housing may be stuck on it's gasket to the main case, so may need to tap the housing sideways and up and down near the end of the housing to break it free.

Of course you will need a new gasket, and need to carefully scrape off any old gasket or gasket residue, without gouging the aluminum.

Look inside your old housing, look at the bushing that the driveshaft rides on. When you get another housing, look at it's bushing, you don't want to put in a replacement housing with a badly worn bushing, or else it will leak out the extension housing rear seal, and you will have to pull it off again. A new bushing can be pressed in. You will also need a new seal, too.

Grease only the lengthwise splines on the output shaft with wheel bearing grease. This will allow the driveshaft's yoke to easily slide in/out of the trans in operation as the rear axle travels up/down over bumps. Lube the extension housing bushing with some ATF right before assembly. Your Chiltons may have the torque required for the bolts. If not, I could look it up tomorrow.

I (luckily) have never seen a cracked extension housing. You should find out WHY it cracked. A theory: Your motor mounts are loose or totally shot, and when you goosed it before it shifted, when it actually engaged it was a big shock (due to high engine RPM), and the poorly-restrained engine rotated some with the trans, and the only thing stopping the torque effect was the trans mount, which held, but the torque shock cracked the extension housing. Just a theory.

This thread may be of help if you have to replace a worn-out extension housing bushing:

The reason why it cracked was probably because when I looked under there, the left bolt was so loose you could see probably about 4 or 5 threads. The extra torque on that is probably what killed it.

I'm getting new housing, gasket, and bushing(might as well, even if it's not) through my brother's shop.

I'll post after effects as well.
